Tarakhase Pond Emerges as a Tourist Destination in Roshi Rural Municipality

Tarakhase Pond, located in Roshi Rural Municipality-3, has become a popular tourist destination. The local government has developed physical infrastructure around the pond, attracting visitors to this scenic location situated at the summit of the hill. According to resident Ganga Bahadur Tamang, tourists have started coming specifically to visit and explore Tarakhase Pond.

Visitors to the area also take the opportunity to visit the nearby Devithan temple, where it is believed that bathing in the pond and worshiping the deity fulfills one’s wishes. Resident Suraj Lama of Roshi Rural Municipality-3 mentioned that the pond, located at the top of the Mahabharat hill range, is considered a sacred site where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have set foot. Despite harsh drought conditions, the pond never dries up. A special fair is held here on Janai Purnima, and shamans believe they gain spiritual power after visiting the pond on this day.

According to local lore, the pond was formed when a fragment of a star fell, creating a depression in the ground that later filled with water. The pond is known for its crystal-clear water that never runs dry. Ward Chairperson Dhanjit Lama of Roshi Rural Municipality-3 stated that Tarakhase Pond is a key tourist attraction in the area.

It is said that Guru Rinpoche meditated at this pond after traveling from Halesi in Khotang to Yarinag Cave in Timal, Hatti Aahal in Mahabharat, and finally to Tarakhase Pond. Ward Chairperson Lama also mentioned that infrastructure development has begun to promote tourism in this religiously and culturally significant area. Roads, picnic spots, and toilets have already been constructed to improve access to the pond.

Roshi Rural Municipality Vice-Chairperson Mim Bahadur Waiba highlighted that the municipality is working systematically to develop and promote Tarakhase Pond, located at an altitude of 2,550 meters. A trekking route through the Mahabharat region is currently under construction. The staircase from Phulchowki to Tarakhase Pond has been completed, and a detailed master plan is in place to extend the route to Ghyanglek in Sindhuli via Bhumechuli Jukepani.

Roshi Rural Municipality Chairperson Dinesh Lama has urged for more promotion of Tarakhase Pond. He also informed that the management of the pond and the construction of necessary infrastructure are underway. With a budget of one crore rupees from the federal government’s special grant for the fiscal year 2080/081, a staircase, railings, toilets, taps, a water tank, accommodations, and a parking area have been constructed.

Visitors to Tarakhase can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding green hills and stunning Himalayan peaks. To reach Tarakhase, one must travel from Banepa via Namobuddha, Dapcha, Gahate, Phalame Sanghu, Shikhar Ambot, Sanjkot, and Ningale.
