Teej Cultural Festival 2081 to be Held in Pokhara with Focus on Tourism and Cultural Promotion

The Tourism Businesswomen’s Association of Nepal (TEWAN) has announced the second edition of the “Teej Cultural Festival 2081,” set to take place on September 6 and 7 at Barahi Ghat in Lakeside, Pokhara. This festival aims to connect the traditional Teej culture with tourism, showcasing Nepal’s rich heritage through various cultural activities.

At a press conference held in Pokhara, Tewan’s Chairperson Kamala Giri highlighted that this year’s festival, themed “Inclusive Participation for Sustainable Tourism,” will continue the tradition that started last year. The event is designed to promote Nepal’s ancient customs, culture, art, and religion in alignment with tourism goals.

The festival will feature a range of activities including a cultural Teej song competition, sports events, and discussions on tourism-related topics. According to General Secretary Anita Khadka Bhattarai, the festival will kick off with a cultural procession from Warahi Chok at 10 a.m. on the first day, culminating in the formal inauguration at Nepal Trust’s field in Barahi Ghat.

The first day will also see the commencement of cultural programs and the Teej song competition. The second day will include sports activities and group discussions on women’s empowerment, tourism, and culture. Discussions will feature prominent cultural figures including Tirtha Shrestha, Khushbu Oli from the National Democracy Party, and Dr. Raju Acharya.

Program Coordinator Shanta Timilsina reported that 16 groups have already registered for the competition, where participants are required to present Teej songs focusing on tourism promotion and women’s entrepreneurship. Prizes will be awarded to the top performers, with the first, second, and third-place winners receiving NPR 30,000, NPR 20,000, and NPR 15,000 respectively, along with certificates. Consolation prizes of NPR 5,000 will be given to 10 additional groups, and special awards will be given for outstanding dance performances and traditional displays.

Senior tourism entrepreneur and Tewan advisor Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai stressed the need for a comprehensive action plan to declare Pokhara as a tourism capital. Advisor Bobar Jung Gurung expressed concern about the erosion of traditional walking trails and highlighted the recently publicized Gurung Heritage Trail as a vital alternative. He emphasized the importance of broadening the scope of Pokhara’s tourism capital designation.

Former President Renu Thapa, Vice President Prabha Subedi, and Secretary Shobha Adhikari Paudel, among others, have called for support and collaboration to ensure the festival’s success.
