Thamchaur: Unveiling Baglung’s Hidden Gem for Thrilling Escapes

Thamchaur is located at an elevation of about 2,200 meters above sea level. Perched atop a high hill, Thamchaur is filled with natural beauty, and the view from here captivates many visitors. To the north, one can observe the snowy mountain ranges, forests of blooming rhododendrons, and tall mountains. It is an excellent destination for sightseeing.

Due to its geographical remoteness, Thamchaur has remained relatively unnoticed until recently, though a few domestic tourists have started visiting. Although there is a road leading to Thamchaur, it is not yet properly developed. The peaceful environment, fresh air, and the sounds of birds chirping relieve the fatigue of visitors.

It is located about 13 kilometers north of Bhimgithe Bazar in Baglung Badigad Rural Municipality-7, can be reached by both car and on foot. Although the road from Bhimgithe to Thamchaur, passing through Dandagaun, Majkhark, and Asaregau, is somewhat challenging, the beauty of it makes the journey worthwhile. Upon arrival, tourists are welcomed by views of the mountains, tall hills, and a variety of colorful flowers.

From Thamchaur, visitors can see the Dhaulagiri range and several other mountains, as well as places like Dhorpatan, Nisikhola, Badigad, Gulmi, Pyuthan, Rolpa, and Rukum. Various species of birds and wildlife can also be seen up close. It is regarded as a viewpoint offering a panorama of the Himalayas, forests, rivers, gorges, and settlements.

Local people offer tourists traditional dishes such as aanto, dhindo, local chicken, goat meat, and maize rotis. The municipality is also working on improving the infrastructure for tourists.

The Badigad Rural Municipality has constructed public toilets, ponds, temples, and a trust building for tourists in the vast Thamchaur plains. Resident Rekhiram Budha mentioned that a place once used for grazing cattle is now becoming a tourist destination.

Every year, more than a thousand tourists visit Thamchaur during New Year’s Day and Holi Full Moon. To attract year-round tourists, Rekhiram Budha emphasizes the need for proper roads and extensive promotion by the government.

Thamchaur can be reached by car in 45 minutes from Bhimgithe Bazaar on the Mid-Hill Highway, or in about three hours on foot. The Badigad Rural Municipality has prioritized developing Thamchaur as a tourist destination, having already invested around NPR 5 million in infrastructure. However, due to geographical challenges, the road is not yet fully developed.

Municipality Chairperson Gandaki Thapa Adhikari mentioned that the local budget alone is insufficient to fully develop the road to Thamchaur. Therefore, cooperation between all three levels of government is necessary. Still, the municipality has made significant investments to improve the road, and if it could be made accessible to the gravel level, it would significantly increase tourist visits.
