In a significant step toward enhancing Nepal’s tourism infrastructure, a ‘Tourist Information Center’ has officially been established in Thamel, one of the busiest and most iconic tourist destinations in the federal capital, Kathmandu. The center was launched through a collaborative effort of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Bagmati Province, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-26, and the Thamel Tourism Development Council.
Inauguration by the Minister of Culture and Tourism
The newly established center was inaugurated by the Bagmati Province’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Bimal Thakuri, in a formal event held earlier today. During the program, Minister Thakuri expressed optimism that the center would not only serve Thamel but play a vital role in the overall promotion and development of tourism in Nepal. He stated that this is the second such center under the provincial government, following the one previously set up in Chitwan.
Minister Thakuri emphasized that the center would act as a comprehensive information hub for tourists, offering guidance and knowledge about various tourist attractions across the country. Furthermore, he announced that a public toilet would also be constructed in Thamel to facilitate visitors and contribute to better urban management in the area.
High Tourist Footfall in Thamel
Khyaam Raj Tiwari, Ward Chairperson of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-26, highlighted that nearly 80 percent of foreign tourists visiting Nepal make their way to Thamel. Given this high volume of tourist traffic, the establishment of a formal tourist information center in the area is expected to provide immense support to international visitors by offering reliable, timely, and relevant information. Tiwari remarked that such a center is crucial for ensuring that tourists enjoy a safe, organized, and enriching experience during their stay in Nepal.
Tech-Enabled and Comprehensive Travel Guidebook
Adding further scope to the province’s tourism promotion strategy, Dipendra Subedi, Secretary at the Bagmati Province Ministry of Culture and Tourism, announced plans to publish a comprehensive ‘Travel Book’ that will cover all major tourism destinations across the province.
He added that the Tourist Information Center would be increasingly integrated with modern digital tools and technology, enabling real-time updates and facilitating easy access to information for both domestic and foreign travelers.
Broad Institutional Support and Stakeholder Involvement
Several key figures in Nepal’s tourism sector attended the inauguration and expressed their support for the initiative. Bhakta Bahadur Bhandari, Chief of the Kathmandu Tourism Office, along with Dhruba Adhikari, Chairperson of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, and Dr. Ramsharan Thapaliya, former Chairperson, shared their enthusiasm for the project, stating that this center would serve as a strategic touchpoint for guiding tourists, promoting Nepal’s image globally, and increasing overall tourist satisfaction.
Sagar Pandey, President of the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), also endorsed the move. He stated that accurate information is the backbone of any vibrant tourism industry, and the center would fill an essential gap in helping tourists navigate Nepal’s diverse offerings, from trekking trails and cultural sites to local transportation and accommodations.
Comprehensive Services for Tourists
According to Pawan Kumar Pokhrel, Chief of the Tourism Division at the Bagmati Province Ministry of Tourism, the center will provide detailed and curated information to tourists on a range of topics. This includes:
- Trekking routes and permits
- Transportation options within Nepal
- Hotel and accommodation details
- Local arts, culture, and traditions
- Events, festivals, and community tourism programs
He emphasized that the information provided would be both authentic and tourist-friendly, ensuring travelers can make informed decisions while exploring Nepal.
Thamel’s Transformation as a Global Tourism Hub
Sahadev (Bimal) Dhamala, Vice-Chairperson of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, stated that the council is actively working to transform Thamel into a globally recognized and well-managed tourism hub. With support from provincial and local government bodies, he expressed hope that Thamel would continue to evolve as a more organized, clean, and accessible destination for tourists. Dhamala further noted that the information center is a key milestone in this transformation, serving as a gateway to the rest of Nepal’s natural and cultural wonders.
A New Chapter in Nepal’s Tourism Landscape
With the launch of the Tourist Information Center in Thamel, Nepal takes another crucial step in professionalizing its tourism services and enhancing the visitor experience. As one of the most popular tourist districts in Kathmandu, Thamel’s modernization and streamlining through such initiatives is expected to have a ripple effect on the entire tourism ecosystem. The center stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between local and provincial governments and the private sector, aiming to solidify Nepal’s reputation as a must-visit destination for global travelers.
