Third Edition of BITM Kicks Off Today in Nepal

Nepal is all set to host the third edition of the Buddhist International Travel Mart (BITM) starting today, marking a significant step in promoting spiritual and cultural tourism with a special focus on Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. Organized by the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), the prestigious event will run from May 23 to 25, with major programs taking place in both Kathmandu and Lumbini.

Opening Ceremony and Conference in Kathmandu

The inaugural session of BITM 2025 commenced this morning in Kathmandu, where an international conference and exhibition are also being held on May 23 and 25. The opening ceremony attracted a diverse audience comprising tourism entrepreneurs, government officials, spiritual leaders, and international delegates.

The conference features panel discussions, keynote speeches, and presentations on a wide range of topics such as sustainable tourism development, spiritual travel trends, and regional cooperation on Buddhist heritage conservation. Simultaneously, the exhibition showcases Buddhist pilgrimage routes, travel services, tour packages, and traditional cultural artifacts from across Asia.

This two-day Kathmandu program aims to position Nepal as a central hub for Buddhist tourism by spotlighting its historical and spiritual significance in the life of Lord Buddha.

Business-to-Business Session and Closing Ceremony in Lumbini

The event will then shift to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on May 26, where a Business-to-Business (B2B) session, a farm trip, a networking dinner, and the closing ceremony will be conducted.

More than 150 international hosted buyers will meet over 60 national and international sellers, including tour operators, travel agencies, and hospitality providers. These interactions aim to establish new partnerships and encourage cross-border Buddhist pilgrimage packages throughout South and Southeast Asia.

Participation from Major Buddhist Nations

BITM 2025 has drawn interest from over 1,100 international participants from Buddhist-majority countries, including India, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Their presence is expected to boost Nepal’s image as a premier destination for Buddhist pilgrimage and spiritual journeys.

Travel delegations and Buddhist scholars will engage in meaningful cultural exchanges, enhancing bilateral cooperation and mutual understanding within the global Buddhist tourism community.

Strengthening Nepal’s Role in Global Spiritual Tourism

According to NATTA, the third edition of BITM is a historic opportunity to uplift Nepal’s standing in the global tourism sector by showcasing its Buddhist spiritual legacy. From the serene landscape of Lumbini to the sacred stupas and monasteries of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal offers an unparalleled experience for spiritual travelers.

BITM aligns with Nepal’s national tourism strategy and the Visit Nepal promotional campaigns, aiming to boost tourist footfall, deepen cultural appreciation, and promote the conservation of sacred Buddhist sites.

As the world turns its eyes to Nepal this week, BITM 2025 stands as a testament to the country’s dedication to spiritual tourism, cultural preservation, and regional cooperation through the shared legacy of Buddhism.
