Third Edition of BITM Set to Boost Nepal’s Spiritual Tourism to New Heights

Nepal is gearing up to host the third edition of the Buddhist International Travel Mart (BITM), a major international event aimed at promoting spiritual and cultural tourism, particularly Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. Organized by the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), the event is scheduled to take place from May 23 to 25, 2025, with activities being held in both Kathmandu and Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

Opening Ceremony and Conference in Kathmandu

The opening ceremony, international conference, and exhibition will be held in Kathmandu on May 24 and 25. These sessions are designed to highlight the importance of Buddhist tourism globally, and to position Nepal as a central hub for spiritual journeys linked to the life and teachings of Lord Buddha. A wide range of experts, spiritual leaders, tourism entrepreneurs, and government officials are expected to participate in these sessions.

The international conference will feature panel discussions, keynote speeches, and presentations on topics such as sustainable tourism, spiritual travel trends, and regional Buddhist heritage conservation. The accompanying exhibition will showcase tour packages, Buddhist pilgrimage routes, travel services, and cultural artifacts related to Buddhist traditions from across Asia.

Business-to-Business Session and Closing Events in Lumbini

Following the events in Kathmandu, the B2B session, farm trip, networking dinner, and closing ceremony will be held in Lumbini on May 26. Lumbini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the holiest places for Buddhists worldwide, is expected to serve as an inspiring backdrop for promoting Nepal’s unique offerings in spiritual tourism.

The B2B session will connect more than 150 international hosted buyers with over 60 national and international sellers, including tour operators, travel agencies, and hospitality companies. These interactions aim to foster partnerships and develop cross-border travel packages centered around Buddhist pilgrimage destinations.

Participation from Major Buddhist Countries

According to NATTA, the event will witness the participation of over 1,100 visitors from major Buddhist countries including India, China, Bhutan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. This diverse representation underscores the growing global interest in Buddhist pilgrimage tourism and strengthens Nepal’s appeal as a central spiritual destination.

The presence of buyers and sellers from countries with a strong Buddhist heritage is expected to enhance networking opportunities and encourage collaborative efforts to boost regional Buddhist travel circuits. Travel delegations and Buddhist scholars from international Buddhist communities will also engage in cultural exchanges during the event.

Promoting Spiritual and Cultural Tourism

NATTA has expressed strong optimism about the event, stating that the third edition of BITM will be a historic opportunity for the promotion of spiritual tourism, especially highlighting Nepal’s Buddhist sites and cultural legacy. With a long-term vision of establishing Nepal as a global center for Buddhist pilgrimage, the mart aligns with national tourism goals and the Visit Nepal promotional campaigns.

Organizers believe that such events not only increase tourist footfall but also contribute to deeper cultural understanding and preservation of sacred sites. From the serene atmosphere of Lumbini to the sacred shrines in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal offers a unique spiritual journey for global travelers.
