In a bid to promote the religious and tourism potential of Sidingba Dham and surrounding destinations, Sidingba Rural Municipality has launched a three-day tourism festival. The event, which aims to boost local tourism and raise awareness about the area’s cultural and ecological value, began with great enthusiasm and participation from both locals and visitors.
Situated at an altitude of 3,515 meters above sea level, Sidingba Dham is a scenic site known for its religious significance and rich biodiversity. Surrounded by dense forests, majestic waterfalls, and spiritual energy, the area has long remained underpromoted despite being a gateway to the famed Kanchenjunga trekking route.
According to the rural municipality, the festival has been strategically organized to draw attention not only to Sidingba Dham but also to other nearby attractions such as Dhungdhunge Waterfall, Timbung Pokhari (Timbung Lake), Chamere Gufa (Bat Cave), Kalipokhari, and Hattidunga (Elephant Rock). These hidden gems within the municipality are filled with natural charm and hold the potential to become popular destinations for eco-tourism and adventure seekers.
Rural Municipality Chairperson Man Bahadur Rai expressed concern that despite its pivotal location on the Kanchenjunga trail, Sidingba Dham remains neglected due to inadequate publicity. “This festival serves as a starting point to introduce the area to both domestic and international tourists,” he said. “We believe that cultural exchange, nature exploration, and spiritual tourism will all benefit from the exposure.”
The festival features a diverse range of programs, including a pilgrimage journey to Sidingba Dham, sports competitions, local product exhibitions, and vibrant cultural performances. Traditional music performances such as Nau Maati Baja and the ethnic Chyabrung dance, a cultural expression of the Limbu community, are highlights of the celebration. Additionally, a ward-level volleyball tournament has been organized to encourage youth participation and community bonding.
Visitors to the festival site are treated to breathtaking panoramic views, including a clear sight of Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, the sacred Pathibhara Temple (also known as Mukkumlung), and the serene Timbung Pokhari. On a clear day, attendees can even view parts of Sikkim and Darjeeling in neighboring India, adding an international dimension to the location’s appeal.
Sidingba Dham holds deep spiritual value among the local Limbu population and other Himalayan communities. It is believed to be a sacred site where ancient practices and rituals connect people with nature and the divine. The dham is not only a destination for religious pilgrims but also a serene retreat for trekkers and researchers interested in Himalayan culture, flora, and fauna.
Organizers believe that the tourism festival will help increase visitor flow and highlight the area as a key spiritual and adventure tourism hub. By integrating cultural heritage with natural exploration, the event aims to provide a sustainable tourism model that empowers local communities and preserves their unique traditions.
Through this initiative, Sidingba Rural Municipality seeks to pave the way for future development projects, infrastructure improvement, and long-term tourism planning that benefits both the economy and the environment. As the festival continues over the next two days, more events and interactive programs are expected to attract further attention to this underrated yet spectacular destination in eastern Nepal.
