According to the Procedure Related to Operation of Vehicles–2082 issued by the Election Commission, tourist vehicles will be permitted to operate if they obtain authorization at least two days before the election date. The decision has been taken considering that international flights will continue as usual even on polling day, requiring reliable transport services for visiting travelers.
Special Provision to Support Tourism Movement
Election-related restrictions typically limit vehicle movement to maintain security, prevent misuse of transportation, and ensure a free and fair electoral process. However, recognizing that Nepal remains an active international tourism destination, the Commission introduced a flexible mechanism to avoid inconvenience to foreign visitors.
Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that tourist vehicles can operate legally if they secure permits from the concerned District Administration Office as well as the Commission’s office in Kathmandu at least two days before March 5. This advance approval system is intended to allow proper verification while preventing last-minute disruptions. Tour operators, hotels, and travel agencies have been advised to coordinate early with authorities to manage guest transfers, airport pickups, and intercity travel plans.
Ensuring Regular International Flight Services
Officials clarified that international flights will not be halted on election day, as maintaining global connectivity is considered essential for the country’s economy and reputation as a reliable travel destination. With passengers continuing to arrive and depart, the operation of tourist vehicles has been categorized as a necessary facilitation rather than a general relaxation of election-day transport rules. The arrangement is expected to particularly assist travelers arriving for trekking, pilgrimage, and cultural tours who may otherwise face logistical challenges due to temporary transportation controls.
