Traditional Sel Roti Making Competition Ignites Tihar Spirit in Kathmandu – Celebrating Nepali Culture and Culinary Heritage

A unique Sel Roti-making competition was organized at the Nepal Tourism Board’s premises in Kathmandu to celebrate the Tihar festival and promote traditional Nepali cuisine. The event was a collaborative effort by the Nepal Tourism Board, Trinity Marketing and Event Management, the Journalists Association for Tourism Nepal (JAT-Nepal), the Chef Association of Nepal, the Women Entrepreneurs Association, the Woollen Goods Development Association, and other organizations.

Devi Prasad Pant, President of JAT-Nepal, highlighted that the competition aimed to boost tourism by reviving the traditional delicacy, Sel Roti, a rice flour-based ring-shaped treat enjoyed widely during festivals.

Sabitri Dhungana, the event coordinator, expressed that the competition highlighted the unique culinary skills of Nepali women. A total of 26 women from 13 different communities across the Kathmandu Valley showcased their expertise in preparing Sel Roti. Winners for first, second, and third places were awarded rice, symbolizing a connection to the cultural roots of this traditional dish.

The judging panel featured culinary experts, including Shyam Lama, former president of the Chef Association of Nepal and current director of the Chef Association Foundation, along with Senior Chef Ratna Bahadur Thapa and Padam Alemgar, General Secretary of the Chef Association of Nepal. The judges offered valuable insights on making the perfect Sel Roti, sharing tips on essential ingredients and techniques.

The event not only celebrated the Tihar festival but also emphasized preserving and promoting Nepali culinary heritage, strengthening Nepal’s tourism appeal through its rich cultural traditions.
