Traditional Taaya: Macha Dance Competition to Feature 36 Groups in Pokhara

This year, 36 groups will participate in the traditional Taaya: Macha dance competition, a cultural event that reflects the unique heritage of the Newar community. The competition, which has a 250-year history, is set to be a highlight of the Gaijatra festival in Pokhara.

During a press conference held today, Ashok Palikhe, President of Newa Khala Kaski, explained the religious significance of the Taaya: Macha dance. He noted that the performance, traditionally held during the Gaijatra festival, is believed to aid in the liberation of ancestors’ souls.

Although Gaijatra falls on August 20 this year, the dance competition will be held on August 24. The event is being organized by Newa Khala Kaski in collaboration with Newa Misa Puch Naya Bazar, Newa Lhyam Puch: Naya Bazar, and Newa Welfare Trust.

The competition will feature 36 groups, with separate categories for men and women. According to information provided at the press conference, the first-place winner in the men’s category will receive a cash prize of Rs 301,000, the second-place winner will receive Rs 201,000, and the third-place winner will receive Rs 101,000. In the women’s category, the first, second, and third-place winners will receive Rs 50,001, Rs 30,001, and Rs 20,001, respectively.

This event is set to showcase the rich cultural traditions of the Newar community, offering participants and spectators alike an opportunity to engage with and celebrate their heritage.
