Trekking tourism is gaining popularity across various destinations in Banke district, as both domestic and Indian tourists are increasingly exploring the region’s natural and religious sites. According to tourism business operators, the district’s major pilgrimage and scenic spots are now seeing a growing crowd of hikers eager to experience the combination of nature, spirituality, and cultural heritage. Tourism operators have noted that several renowned destinations in the district are seeing increasing footfall from both domestic travelers and Indian visitors, eager to enjoy trekking and sightseeing in the region.

Popular Trekking and Pilgrimage Destinations

Among the most sought-after trekking destinations in Banke are Baba Barfani Temple, Gailakhe, and Santaneshwor Mahadev Temple in Raptisonari Rural Municipality, Govardhan Dham in Narainapur Rural Municipality, and Kammar Shah Temple in Dudwa Rural Municipality. Of these, Baba Barfani Temple, Santaneshwor Mahadev Temple, and Govardhan Dham stand out as the most attractive sites for trekking enthusiasts, combining natural beauty with cultural and spiritual experiences, said Shreeram Sigdel, outgoing President of the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), Banke.

Sigdel further emphasized that visitors can enhance their trekking experience by exploring the Banke National Park through cycling, hiking, jungle walks, and safari trips. He highlighted that effective management of these natural and cultural sites could further boost tourism by attracting both domestic and foreign tourists.

Tourist Experiences and Attractions

Tourists visiting Baba Barfani Temple, located on the Mahabharat Chure hills, have expressed delight at the scenic beauty. Pushpa Gyawali Khanal, who recently completed the trek, said the lush landscape and fresh air offered a rejuvenating experience. She also stressed the need for better infrastructure to facilitate smoother access for trekkers.

Similarly, Harilal Neupane, President of the Gulmeli Society in Banke, described the Baba Barfani trek as a therapeutic journey, noting that the proximity to nature and the uphill climb provide both mental and physical refreshment.

In the northern part of Narainapur Rural Municipality, Santaneshwor Mahadev Temple, situated about 15 kilometers north of Matehiya Chowk in Ward 5, is emerging as a prime trekking and pilgrimage destination. Journalist Binaya Dixit reported that the temple offers a tranquil experience for visitors, with panoramic natural views adding excitement and aesthetic appeal to the trek. He noted that both domestic and Indian pilgrims frequently undertake this journey, trekking up the hill to reach the sacred site.

Govardhan Dham: Scenic and Spiritual Appeal

The Govardhan Dham area is another highlight, offering a combination of spiritual significance and mesmerizing scenery. Located approximately 5 kilometers north of Jayarampuru, Ward 4 of Narainapur, Govardhan Dham can be accessed via four-wheeled vehicles from Nepalgunj to Narainapur, and then by motorcycle through forested terrain. The area is flanked by the Baba Barfani Ashram to the east and the Santaneshwor Temple to the west.

Dixit emphasized that the hilltop landscape of Narainapur, the Rapti River valley, and the various monasteries and temples scattered across the area offer immense potential for both religious tourism and trekking adventures. Short-duration visits to these sites also provide visitors with satisfying cultural and spiritual experiences.

Tourism Potential and Future Prospects

With its diverse natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and religious significance, Banke has significant potential to become a hub for trekking and pilgrimage tourism. Improved infrastructure, proper site management, and promotion of these destinations could attract even more visitors, both domestic and international, while simultaneously contributing to local economic growth.

The district’s blend of lush forests, sacred temples, river valleys, and panoramic hilltop views ensures that trekking enthusiasts, pilgrims, and casual tourists alike can enjoy a rich and rewarding experience. With growing interest and increased footfall, Banke is poised to emerge as one of Nepal’s attractive destinations for spiritual, cultural, and adventure tourism.
