Tribhuvan International Airport to Close for Nighttime Construction: Extended Shifts and Added Benefits for Staff

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) will undergo nighttime closures from November 8, 2024, to March 31, 2025, as part of an infrastructure enhancement project. The Nepal Civil Aviation Authority (CAAN) has announced that the airport will remain closed from 10 PM to 8 AM during this period for the development of essential structures such as parking bays, taxiways, and hangars.

Despite the closure, CAAN plans to deploy staff in three shifts, with each shift maintaining the standard 6 hours and 50 minutes of duty time to ensure smooth airport operations and preparedness for any emergency needs.

In a recent meeting held on October 21, CAAN’s management confirmed the decision to maintain current duty schedules, deploying personnel from their head office according to an approved whole-night roster. The authority has also committed to providing additional compensation to staff working these extended night shifts.

CAAN’s move to deploy staff even during low-traffic hours underlines its commitment to ensuring both service continuity and safety during the construction period. Although a limited number of staff could be on emergency duty, CAAN is instead prioritizing readiness by keeping the regular staffing levels and compensating for the additional hours.

With these measures in place, TIA anticipates smooth project execution while minimizing disruption to its daily operations and ensuring traveler safety throughout the airport’s infrastructure upgrades.
