U.S. to Supply Nepal with M28 Skytrucks and Additional Aircraft for Disaster Relief

The United States has committed to delivering two M28 Skytrucks to Nepal by January 2025, with an estimated value of approximately $37 million. These short take-off and landing, fixed-wing aircraft are designed to enhance Nepal’s disaster recovery and relief operations. Notably, one of the M28 Skytrucks will serve as a dedicated air ambulance, marking the introduction of such a specialized aircraft in Nepal.

The assistance package includes comprehensive support, such as pilot and maintainer training, as well as ongoing parts support. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the United States to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Nepal, which also includes other forms of aid and grants.

In 2022, the U.S. had already pledged to provide Nepal with two Bell 412 helicopters valued at $44 million. These helicopters will come with pilot and maintainer training, as well as logistical support, and are expected to be delivered in the coming years.

During his recent visit, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, Richard Verma, announced an additional commitment of $100 million in grant assistance. This funding is intended for the provision of more helicopters, training, and support equipment, subject to congressional approval and fund availability.

The U.S. and Nepali governments are collaborating to ensure that the aircraft are tailored to meet Nepal’s specific needs for disaster relief and recovery. This effort highlights the ongoing commitment to enhancing Nepal’s capabilities in managing and responding to emergencies.

The inclusion of M28 Skytrucks and Bell 412 helicopters reflects a significant step in strengthening Nepal’s disaster response infrastructure, supporting its ability to handle emergencies more effectively.
