A major wellness awareness and tourism promotion program aimed at highlighting the growing potential of wellness tourism in Nepal was successfully organized on June 19 in Bhairahawa by Tranquility Spa in partnership with Spa Association Nepal, with support from the Nepal Tourism Board.
The event, held at Siddhartha Vilasa Bhairahawa, brought together government officials, tourism industry leaders, wellness experts, and members of the business community, who emphasized the growing importance of promoting healthy living and expanding wellness tourism in Lumbini Province. Organizers said the program was conducted as part of Nepal’s ongoing focus on strengthening wellness tourism and raising awareness about its vast potential to contribute to tourism growth, particularly in the Lumbini region.

Program Focused on Expanding Wellness Tourism Awareness
The wellness awareness and tourism promotion program was organized in the context of Nepal’s broader tourism development efforts, with a key objective of creating awareness about the untapped opportunities that wellness tourism offers for regional and national tourism growth. Industry experts highlighted that wellness tourism, which combines travel with activities focused on physical, mental, and emotional well-being, is emerging as one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global tourism industry.
Participants discussed how destinations like Lumbini, already globally recognized for spiritual and religious tourism, hold significant potential to expand into wellness-focused travel experiences including spa therapies, yoga retreats, meditation programs, holistic healing, and preventive health tourism. The event also aimed to position Lumbini as a destination that can attract travelers seeking both spiritual connection and wellness experiences.
Tourism Minister Officially Inaugurates Event
The formal inauguration ceremony was led by Nepal’s Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Khadak Raj Paudel.
The event was attended by several prominent figures from Nepal’s tourism and hospitality sectors, including Suresh Puri, President of Spa Association Nepal; Bhuwan Faiju, Chairperson of the organizing committee; Deepak Raj Joshi, former Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board; Chandra Prakash Shrestha, President of Siddhartha Hotel Association; Narad Gautam, Secretary at Lumbini Province’s Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Transport; Laxman Neupane, Founder Chairman of Siddhartha Hospitality Group; and Nisha Shrestha, Vice Chairperson of the organizing committee.
The gathering reflected growing collaboration between government agencies and private sector stakeholders working toward strengthening Nepal’s tourism diversification efforts.
Minister Highlights Wellness as Core of Tourism Development
Addressing the program, Minister Khadak Raj Paudel said that the central purpose of human life is the pursuit of happiness, and travel and wellness are deeply connected to that journey. He stated that a major component of Nepal’s tourism identity is closely linked with wellness tourism and emphasized that the country’s tourism industry remains incomplete without developing this important segment.
According to the minister, Nepal’s natural environment, spiritual heritage, yoga traditions, meditation culture, and holistic healing practices place the country in a strong position to become a leading wellness tourism destination in South Asia. He further stressed that integrating wellness experiences into mainstream tourism development could help Nepal attract higher-value international visitors while extending average tourist stay duration.
Government Working to Strengthen Air Connectivity
During his remarks, Minister Khadak Raj Paudel also addressed Nepal’s aviation sector and ongoing efforts to improve international connectivity. He stated that the government is actively working to bring Gautam Buddha International Airport into full regular operation as quickly as possible.
The minister said improving international air connectivity remains a top priority for the government as Nepal seeks to strengthen tourism growth in key destinations beyond Kathmandu. He also reiterated Nepal’s ambitious national tourism target of attracting 10 million international tourists, emphasizing that diversified tourism sectors such as wellness tourism will play a major role in helping achieve this long-term goal.
Spa Association Nepal Highlights Growing Wellness Potential
Speaking at the program, Spa Association Nepal President Suresh Puri shared detailed insights into the growing opportunities for wellness tourism development in Nepal. He emphasized that prevention is often more effective than treatment and highlighted the increasing importance of preventive healthcare in today’s fast-paced modern world.
According to Puri, rising stress levels globally have made wellness practices such as exercise, yoga, meditation, spa therapy, and mental health management increasingly important for maintaining overall well-being. He noted that international travelers are now actively seeking destinations that offer wellness-centered travel experiences, creating new opportunities for Nepal’s tourism industry. Puri added that Nepal’s unique blend of natural beauty, peaceful environment, Himalayan setting, and ancient wellness traditions gives the country a strong competitive advantage in attracting wellness-focused travelers.

Lumbini Emerging as Future Wellness Tourism Destination
Industry stakeholders at the event agreed that Lumbini Province, already known worldwide as the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, has enormous potential to become a leading destination for spiritual and wellness tourism. Experts believe combining religious tourism with wellness retreats, meditation centers, yoga programs, and holistic healing services could significantly strengthen the region’s tourism economy.
The successful program in Bhairahawa reflects growing efforts by tourism stakeholders to position Nepal not only as an adventure destination but also as a global center for wellness, healing, mindfulness, and healthy living tourism. As global demand for wellness travel continues rising, industry leaders say Nepal now has a major opportunity to establish itself as one of Asia’s leading destinations for sustainable and wellness-based tourism experiences.
