The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has honoured Alfred Pisani, founder and executive chairman of Corinthia, with its prestigious Icon Award for his lifetime contribution to hospitality and his role in transforming a Maltese business into an internationally recognised hotel brand. Through decades of entrepreneurship and investment, Pisani has helped raise Malta’s profile in the global hospitality industry while demonstrating how a home-grown brand can achieve international success.
The award was presented during a VIP dinner on October 8, 2026, at the 26th WTTC Global Summit in Malta. Pisani’s daughter, Alexandra Pisani, General Manager of Corinthia Palace and Executive of Development at Corinthia Hotels, accepted the award on his behalf. The ceremony brought together more than 1,000 delegates, including over 200 chief executive officers from international travel and tourism companies, government ministers and other industry representatives.

WTTC Recognises Pisani’s Lifetime Contribution to Hospitality
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Icon Award recognises individuals whose lifetime achievements have made a lasting impact on tourism destinations, businesses and the wider travel and tourism industry. It celebrates visionary leadership, entrepreneurship and contributions that strengthen the sector’s reputation, raise standards and create enduring benefits for future generations. Pisani received the recognition for his pioneering role in developing Malta’s hospitality industry and expanding the international reach of the Corinthia brand. His work has showcased Maltese expertise in hotel management and hospitality while strengthening the country’s reputation as a destination for quality service and premium tourism experiences.
From a Maltese Restaurant to a Global Hospitality Brand
Pisani’s entrepreneurial journey began in 1962 with the opening of a restaurant in Malta. In 1968, he established the Corinthia Palace Hotel, laying the foundation for a hospitality business that would eventually expand into international markets. Over the decades, his vision and commitment helped transform these early ventures into the Corinthia brand, which has developed a presence in major international destinations. His success reflects decades of investment, business development and adaptation to the changing expectations of domestic and international guests. By building on his Maltese roots while pursuing opportunities abroad, Pisani demonstrated how a locally established business could compete in the global hospitality market.
Beyond expanding his company, Pisani has contributed to Malta’s international recognition in hospitality and tourism. The growth of Corinthia has helped bring the country’s hotel expertise and business capabilities to a wider audience, highlighting the role of private-sector entrepreneurship in strengthening a destination’s global identity. His career also offers an example for aspiring entrepreneurs, illustrating how a clear vision, sustained effort and long-term commitment can help transform a local business into an internationally recognised brand.

WTTC Praises Pisani’s Vision and Lasting Legacy
Gloria Guevara, President and Chief Executive Officer of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), praised Pisani’s vision, perseverance, and entrepreneurial leadership, highlighting his achievement in building a globally recognised hospitality brand while remaining connected to its Maltese origins. She also noted that his contribution extends beyond business success, helping introduce Maltese hospitality to international markets and inspiring future generations of entrepreneurs and tourism leaders.
Guevara’s remarks underscored Pisani’s influence on Malta’s tourism and hospitality sectors, as well as his role in establishing a lasting international presence for the country’s hotel industry. His achievements demonstrate how home-grown businesses can contribute to destination development while building a reputation that reaches far beyond their country of origin. The Icon Award celebrates Pisani’s decades of dedication to hospitality and recognises his enduring contribution to Malta’s tourism development and the international hotel industry. His journey from a local restaurant to a globally recognised hospitality brand highlights the importance of entrepreneurship, innovation and sustained investment in creating long-term value for tourism destinations.
