The business under the “8K” brand, operated by three Sherpas, has entered its fourth year. The company officially began operations on April 1, and yesterday, April 1, marks the completion of four years.
On the occasion of completing four years, Pemba Sherpa, the operator of “8K Expeditions,” shared that the milestone has given them renewed energy and inspiration to move forward with even greater determination in the future. In an exciting development in Nepal’s tourism and mountaineering sectors, Lakpa Sherpa, Lakpa Thendu Sherpa, and Pemba Sherpa have successfully launched two major ventures, 8K Expeditions and 8K Travel. These companies have quickly gained recognition for their expertise in mountaineering services and tourism, respectively.
Pemba Sherpa, one of the co-founders of the venture, shared his inspiring story of entering the tourism industry through his challenging journey. Pemba moved to Kathmandu in 2005 to pursue his education. During his studies, he began working in trekking, which sparked his interest in mountaineering. Over the years, Pemba gained valuable experience through climbing expeditions in several countries, developing the necessary skills and expertise. In 2018, driven by a passion for the industry and a desire for greater independence, he decided to leave his job and start his own business.
Like many businesses, 8K Expeditions faced significant hurdles during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the three entrepreneurs remained steadfast. By 2021, they officially launched the company under the “8K” brand, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the trio. Their resilience paid off, and within a short span, 8K Expeditions has become one of the leading mountaineering companies in Nepal.
The company has made valuable contributions to the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), especially by organizing various mountain climbing programs that have helped bolster Nepal’s reputation as a global mountaineering hub.
Looking to the future, Pemba shared his excitement about the expansion plans for their ventures. The company intends to scale its tourism services in a more structured manner, including opening new branches and introducing additional offerings.
For the spring season of 2025, 8K Expeditions has been entrusted with the responsibility of opening climbing routes and installing ropes for the Everest and Lhotse expeditions. This prestigious role solidifies the company’s status as a key player in the mountaineering industry in Nepal. Through their combined expertise and dedication, 8K Expeditions and 8K Travel continue to provide exceptional services to mountaineers and tourists, contributing to Nepal’s growing presence in the global tourism and adventure travel markets.
