The Sunakhari Buffer Zone Community Homestay, located in Subarnapur, has struggled to attract tourists due to insufficient publicity and branding. Despite being the first community homestay in Madhes Province and operational since 2073 BS, tourist arrivals have not met expectations.
Shambhu Ram Poudel, Chairperson of Sunakhari Buffer Zone Community Homestay, expressed concerns about the limited promotion efforts. “Although it is the first such facility in Madhes Province, it has not been able to welcome the visitors as expected, possibly due to a dearth of publicity,” said Poudel. He also noted the lack of effective branding for locally produced foods.
Dhannanjay Kumar Singh, Chief of the Cottage and Small Industry Office in Parsa emphasized the need for robust publicity using modern information technology. The office recently launched an awareness program aimed at market expansion and educating homestay proprietors on accountkeeping and marketing.
The homestay, run by 15 households, offers guests a panoramic view of Thori and opportunities to observe wildlife. Located 34 kilometers from Birgunj Metropolitan City, it is near several attractions, including Baghmorcha Mai Monastery, Pranami Temple, Martyrs Memorial, and Sunahari Forest.
Sunakhari User Groups Committee Chairperson Bhim Bahadur Pakhrin highlighted the positive impact of the homestay on local infrastructure, mentioning that it started with a Rs 30,000 loan and now boasts community buildings. He also noted provincial government support for infrastructure improvements.
Jyoti Lama, proprietor of Madhyabarti Community Homestay, pointed out that local cuisine is a significant draw for guests, with many showing interest in delicacies made from locally grown maize and chicken curry. Lama stated, “We have been running this facility at a reasonable cost. If the guests come in bulk, we perform Tamang cultural programs.”
Despite these efforts, Chairperson Poudel raised concerns about regulatory challenges. “It was registered and renewed under the federal government’s agency. But since the tourism office was annexed under the federal government’s jurisdiction, there is no legislation to govern this enterprise in the province,” he explained.
The Sunakhari Buffer Zone Community Homestay continues to seek ways to improve its visibility and attract more visitors, hoping that enhanced publicity and support will help it realize its potential as a premier destination in Madhes Province.
