Lalitpur Metropolitan City’s Mayor, Chiribabu Maharjan, has announced that reconstruction of the city’s historical treasures will proceed without financial support from the federal government.
The ambitious project includes the reconstruction of the Bhairaveshwar Mahadev Temple in the Sunakothi precinct, set to commence from Kartik 6 to Kartik 13. This initiative coincides with the inauguration of the Shrimadbhagwat Gyan Mahayagya (Spiritual Festival), scheduled for these dates. Mayor Maharjan highlighted that internal municipal resources will fund the construction of monasteries, temples, and shrines to preserve Lalitpur’s cultural heritage.
“The process of constructing monasteries, temples, and shrines in the historical style is lengthy when financed by the federal government,” Mayor Maharjan explained. “Unlike the reconstruction of landmarks like Patan Durbar’s Bhimsen Temple, Degutaleju, and Bal Kumari, Lalitpur has excelled.”
Mayor Maharjan emphasized that effective construction leadership will ensure sufficient funds for reconstruction efforts. He expressed confidence that the Mahayagya’s operations in Sunakothi would promote the area’s religious and tourist importance, alongside vital economic contributions.
“After the completion of the Mahayagya, we will publicly announce the commencement of reconstruction,” Mayor Maharjan stated, reaffirming his commitment to complete the reconstruction project without financial obstacles. “This site is essential for international pilgrimage, promoting Lalitpur’s cultural excellence,” said Pandit Pravin Pokharel, the spiritual leader.
Krishna Hari Maharjan, Ward Chairman of Lalitpur-27, is eager for Sunakothi’s Mahayagya to spotlight and increase awareness of its historical significance. He emphasized the necessity for everyone’s collaboration, coordination, and cooperation for its success.
