Bidur Municipality Organizes Eco-Friendly Cycling Event with Charitable Goals
In a commendable initiative blending environmental consciousness, physical well-being, cultural promotion, and social responsibility, Bidur Municipality successfully hosted the ‘Kora Cycling Challenge’ today. The event witnessed the participation of over 150 cyclists from across various districts, including Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Dhading, and Kathmandu.
The 13-kilometer cycling journey was organized with the primary aim of promoting eco-friendly travel, encouraging physical fitness, highlighting religious and cultural heritage, and supporting a philanthropic cause. According to the municipality, the event not only drew enthusiastic cyclists but also succeeded in spreading a positive message regarding cultural preservation and responsible tourism.
Cultural and Religious Heritage at the Forefront
Mayor of Bidur Municipality, Rajan Shrestha, highlighted that the event was the first of its kind in the district and aimed at showcasing the rich religious, cultural, archaeological, and natural heritage sites within the region. “The strong turnout and engagement from professional cyclists across districts have inspired us to continue this initiative in the coming years,” he said.
Mayor Shrestha explained that the ride was not merely a sporting activity but a symbolic journey toward social change. “We centered the program on promoting healthy lifestyles, charitable contributions, and environmental sustainability. The challenge represents a broader movement, an effort to bring about social awareness through sport,” he added.
Funds Raised for Solar Light Distribution in Sindhupalchok
The event also carried a charitable objective. Funds collected through the challenge will be used to provide solar lighting to the marginalized Danuwar community residing in remote areas of Sindhupalchowk district. These communities, still without access to electricity, rely on traditional oil lamps (tuki) for lighting their homes.
According to Mayor Shrestha, the collected funds will go towards installing solar panels in these areas to improve the quality of life for underserved families. “Our goal is to use this platform to shine a light, both literally and metaphorically, on the issues of energy inequality and rural development,” he shared.
Call for Collective Action and Social Responsibility
Mayor Shrestha emphasized the need for greater community engagement in such socially-driven initiatives and encouraged individuals from all sectors to contribute in whatever way possible. The event also underscored the importance of inter-institutional cooperation.
Prominent figures, including Deputy Mayor Prabha Bogati, Subash Jung Thapa from the Nepali Army’s 6th Division in Dhading, Colonel Ashok Kumar Malla of Sher Battalion Nuwakot, and Devraj Bhatta, head of the Military Training Center Trishuli, participated in the ride. Ward Chairperson of Ward No. 1, Lenin Ranjit, also joined the initiative, signaling a strong message of unity and support from local leadership.
Exploring Bidur’s Scenic and Spiritual Trail
The cycling route was thoughtfully designed to pass through several significant religious, cultural, and historical landmarks. The journey commenced from the main administrative office of Bidur Municipality, moved through Bidur Chowk, Bhand Devi Temple, Indrachok, and Swayambhu Mahachaitya.
From there, cyclists traveled past the iconic Nuwakot Durbar (Seven-Storey Palace), the Bhairavi Devi Temple, Dharampani, and the Barahi Temple, before concluding the ride at the Old Market area of Battar and returning to the municipality’s administrative office. The full loop took approximately four hours to complete.
Participants enjoyed not just the physical challenge but also the opportunity to reconnect with the rich cultural tapestry and scenic beauty of their local surroundings. With the route covering sacred sites, ancient palaces, and traditional neighborhoods, the event served as both a cultural immersion and a physical exercise.
