Baraha Taal, nestled near Bhakunde village close to Baglung Bazaar, is fast becoming a popular destination for internal tourists. Surrounded by lush green fields and charming natural landscapes, the serene lake offers visitors a peaceful retreat and ranks high on the list of must-visit spots in the region.
Bhakunde, already well-known as a tourist village in Baglung, boasts Baraha Taal as one of its prime attractions. Young travelers often visit the lake for leisurely outings and enjoy authentic organic meals offered at homestays atop Bhakunde’s hill. The combination of natural beauty and warm hospitality makes it a favored spot for visitors seeking respite from city life.
Infrastructure Development Enhances Tourist Experience
The lake, located in Ward No. 10 of Baglung Municipality, is accessible by a one-hour hike from the Baglung market area. Local resident Som Bahadur Thapa Magar highlighted that recent investments in tourism infrastructure have made the area more attractive and organized.
“An estimated Rs 5 million has been invested by the District Development Committee (former), the Federal Ministry of Tourism, the Provincial Ministry, and Baglung Municipality to develop this site,” said the municipal office.
Previously, the lake and its surroundings were disorganized, but now, with the construction of proper fencing, protective walls, and well-designed walking trails, Baraha Taal has transformed into an inviting and picturesque location.
Som Bahadur Thapa Magar further explained, “Tourists frequently visit here throughout the year. The monsoon season, in particular, accentuates the lake’s beauty.” He also noted that the reflection of the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range and the nearby Baglung Bazaar visible from the lake adds a magical charm that captivates visitors.
A Growing Hub for Domestic Tourists
While the monsoon season sees a slight dip in visitors, weekends and holidays draw significant crowds. “The local homestays have started to flourish due to increased tourism,” Thapa remarked. He added that tourists from other districts come here to escape the summer heat and the hustle of their hometown markets.
Because Baraha Taal is conveniently located close to Baglung Bazaar, it remains a constant favorite destination among tourists. The once unkempt lake area, previously overrun with grass, now presents a tidy and pleasant environment.
Historical and Religious Importance of Baraha Taal
Baraha Taal is not only a natural attraction but also holds historical and religious importance. Local leader and Constituent Assembly Member Narbahadur Thapa explained that during the full moon days of Ashoj (September-October) and Jestha (May-June), a grand fair is held here, accompanied by traditional rituals where ram sacrifices are offered.

“There is a Baraha temple beside the lake, and it is believed that worshipping there fulfills the wishes of devotees. This makes Baraha Taal a suitable destination for both spiritual pilgrims and nature lovers,” Thapa stated.
Investment and Facilities to Boost Local Livelihoods
Covering an area of 2,826 square meters, the lake has seen infrastructure development valued over Rs 5 million, aiming to boost local incomes through tourism promotion. Located at an elevation of 1,300 meters, it takes roughly one hour on foot from the district headquarters to reach the lake.
Visitors often combine their trip to Baraha Taal with visits to nearby attractions such as the homestays in Bhakunde, the scenic viewpoint, and the Bhalewa Bhairavthan temple.
Narbahadur Thapa confirmed that projects including reconstruction of the Baraha Temple, expansion of the lake area, construction of protective barriers, and wall building have been completed. Additionally, the road from Baglung Bazaar via Tityang to the lake is currently being upgraded, which is expected to further increase tourist arrivals.
Homestay Tourism Flourishes with Sunrise and Mountain Views
Since 2011 BS (1964 AD), Bhakunde has pioneered homestay tourism in Baglung, gradually establishing itself as a key player in the local tourism scene. Yam Thapa, a homestay operator, shared that guests often come to enjoy the sunrise and sunset views from Mulabari View Tower, as well as to admire the mountain peaks visible from Baraha Taal.
Because it is the closest tourist destination to the Baglung Bazaar, Baraha Taal sees a steady flow of domestic tourists throughout the year. Locals note that the exact depth of the lake remains unknown, adding an element of mystery to the site.
Baraha Taal – A Gem in Baglung’s Tourism Crown
Baraha Taal’s combination of natural beauty, religious significance, and improving infrastructure is gradually establishing it as a top choice for tourists seeking tranquility and cultural immersion near Baglung. With ongoing road improvements and growing homestay facilities, the lake promises to attract even more visitors, contributing to the economic and social development of the local community.
As more tourists discover its charms, Baraha Taal stands poised to become one of Nepal’s cherished destinations, offering a harmonious blend of nature, tradition, and hospitality.
