Missing Pilgrim Found Safe in Bajura After Two-Day Search

Bajura police have located and rescued a missing pilgrim who had gone out of contact while returning home after visiting the Budhinanda temple. The man, identified as 55-year-old Khimraj Upadhyaya, a resident of Badimalika Municipality–9, Ukhadi, was found at a sheep shed (Bhedigoṭh) in Patan.

Pilgrim Goes Missing on Return Journey

According to police reports, Upadhyaya had traveled to the revered Budhinanda religious site to offer prayers. However, while returning home on Friday evening, he suddenly went out of contact. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Iqbal Hawari of the District Police Office, Bajura, informed that Upadhyaya was discovered by a search team dispatched from the Area Police Office, Kolti. He was found walking in the highland pastures towards a sheep shed in Patan, far from the usual route taken by pilgrims.

The incident occurred on Friday, at around 5:30 PM, when Upadhyaya, after completing his temple visit, had reached Chudepani Bar Danda. Instead of continuing on his way home, he reportedly turned back towards Budhinanda for unknown reasons. His unusual change in direction prompted concerns from locals and fellow pilgrims, who then alerted the authorities.

Police Mobilized for Search and Rescue

Upon receiving the report of the missing person, the District Police Office in Bajura immediately coordinated with the Area Police Office, Kolti, to begin a search operation. Given the challenging terrain and the remoteness of the Budhinanda area, the rescue operation involved trekking through difficult mountain trails and scanning high-altitude pastures where shepherds often keep their livestock.

DSP Hawari explained that the police team, while patrolling the highlands, spotted Upadhyaya walking alone towards Patan. “He appeared physically exhausted but was safe. We immediately provided him with assistance and escorted him to safety,” Hawari said.

Budhinanda: A Challenging but Revered Pilgrimage

Budhinanda is a well-known pilgrimage destination in Bajura district, situated at a high altitude and surrounded by natural beauty. The journey to the temple is not only spiritually significant but also physically demanding due to steep climbs, remote paths, and unpredictable weather conditions. Pilgrims often trek for hours through rugged terrain, which can be challenging even for experienced hikers.

The temple draws thousands of devotees, especially during annual fairs and religious occasions. However, the lack of clear signposts, coupled with thick fog or sudden changes in weather, can cause pilgrims to lose their way. Locals say that similar incidents have occurred in the past, although most missing individuals are eventually found by villagers or police patrols.

Police Urge Caution for Pilgrims

Following the incident, Bajura police have urged pilgrims and trekkers to take extra precautions while traveling to remote religious sites. DSP Hawari emphasized the importance of traveling in groups, informing family or local authorities about travel plans, and carrying necessary supplies such as food, warm clothing, and communication devices.

“While Budhinanda is a sacred and beautiful destination, its remoteness requires careful preparation. We advise visitors to avoid traveling alone and to follow established routes to prevent similar incidents,” he said.

Relieved Family and Community

Upadhyaya’s family expressed immense relief upon hearing the news of his safe recovery. According to neighbors, the entire community had been worried since his disappearance was reported. Many locals joined the police search, scouring possible routes in hopes of finding him. His return has brought a sense of relief and joy to Ukhadi village, where residents have been expressing gratitude towards the police and volunteers involved in the rescue.

The incident has once again highlighted both the spiritual allure and the geographical challenges of pilgrimage routes in Nepal’s mountainous districts. While faith motivates devotees to undertake such treks, the physical and environmental hazards demand equal attention to safety.
