The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has reported that the monsoon’s low-pressure line is currently situated close to its average position. This has resulted in widespread rainfall across all seven provinces of Nepal since early Monday morning. Light to moderate showers have been recorded in various locations, with certain areas experiencing heavy downpours within short periods.
Morning Showers Recorded in Multiple Regions
By Monday morning, light to moderate rainfall was occurring across diverse terrains, from the Terai plains to the hilly landscapes. In the past one hour, notable rain measurements were observed in several areas: Malangwa in Sarlahi district recorded 25 millimeters, while Manpur in Bardiya district received 25.8 millimeters of rain.
Significant Downpours in the Past Three Hours
Over the past three hours, some regions experienced intense rainfall, leading to potential risks of localized flooding. Nijgadh in Bara district recorded an alarming 70 millimeters of rain. Similarly, Manusmara in Sarlahi received 52.6 millimeters, Manpur in Bardiya saw 68.8 millimeters, Malangwa in Sarlahi had 34.2 millimeters, and Ramoli Bairiya in Rautahat experienced 29.6 millimeters of precipitation. Apart from these locations, several other areas reported light to moderate showers during the same period.
Monsoon Outlook
Meteorologists predict generally cloudy conditions across the country on Monday afternoon. The hilly regions of Nepal, particularly in Koshi Province, Bagmati Province, and Gandaki Province, are expected to receive moderate rainfall in many locations. Similarly, some parts of the Madhesh Province and other Terai areas are likely to experience moderate showers. The forecast also warns of heavy rainfall in isolated locations, particularly in the hilly belts of Koshi Province, Bagmati Province, Gandaki Province, as well as parts of Lumbini Province and Sudurpaschim Province’s Terai region.
Possible Heavy Rainfall and Localized Hazards
The Department has issued advisories for residents in the heavy rainfall-prone areas. Heavy rain in short durations can increase the risk of waterlogging, flash floods in small streams, and landslides in hilly terrains. Authorities have urged people living near riverbanks and landslide-prone slopes to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. Farmers, too, are advised to safeguard crops and livestock from the potential impact of continuous rainfall.
Night Weather Forecast
During the night, most parts of the country are expected to remain generally cloudy. Moderate rainfall is likely to occur in many parts of Madhesh Province, as well as the hilly and Terai regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces. Other provinces, too, will see moderate showers in certain hilly and Terai areas.
Heavy Rainfall Possible During Night Hours
Isolated heavy rainfall is also predicted during nighttime in the hilly regions of Koshi Province and in the Terai belts of Madhesh, Koshi, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Such heavy downpours during the night could increase the risk of overnight flooding in low-lying areas. Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have been instructed to remain ready for emergency response if needed.
Impact on Daily Life and Agriculture
The continuous rainfall since Monday morning has already affected transportation in some rural areas, particularly in the Terai where waterlogging has been reported on certain roads. In the hills, the risk of landslides remains high, especially in districts that have already been experiencing saturated soil conditions due to previous rains. For the agricultural sector, this rain could be beneficial for paddy cultivation if water management is maintained. However, excessive rain may damage ripening crops and affect vegetable farming.
Public Safety Measures
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has called on the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and advisories. Travelers are advised to check road conditions before setting out, especially in areas prone to landslides and floods. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged local governments to keep emergency shelters, rescue teams, and medical support on standby.
Outlook for the Coming Days
While the monsoon trough remains active near its normal position, weather experts suggest that the current pattern of light to moderate rainfall, with occasional heavy spells, is likely to continue over the next few days. This will be beneficial for water resources and agriculture but requires constant vigilance to avoid loss of life and property from possible disasters. The Department has assured that it will provide timely updates should there be any significant change in the monsoon’s trajectory or intensity.
