The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has announced a major decision to provide airfare discounts for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers on domestic flights. The decision was made during a meeting chaired by CAAN Director General, which included representatives from the Airlines Operators Association of Nepal (AOAN) and officials from various domestic airline companies.
According to an official press release issued by CAAN, the agreement ensures that elderly passengers above the age of 70 will be entitled to significant discounts on airfare, in accordance with government regulations.

Discount Rates Based on Age
As per the new provision, passengers aged 70 years and above will receive a 50 percent discount on the maximum airfare rate set by the Government of Nepal. Similarly, those aged 75 years and above will enjoy a 70 percent discount, while passengers aged 80 years and above will be granted an 80 percent discount on their air tickets.
This progressive measure is aimed at easing travel for elderly citizens, recognizing their lifelong contributions to society, and encouraging their mobility within the country. The policy ensures that senior citizens can travel comfortably and affordably for personal, religious, or medical purposes.
Support for Differently-Abled Passengers
In addition to the elderly, the new agreement also includes airfare discounts for differently-abled passengers. The CAAN has ensured a minimum 50 percent fare reduction for passengers with disabilities. This initiative underscores the authority’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in air travel, providing equitable opportunities for all citizens regardless of their physical abilities. Officials have highlighted that this move aligns with the government’s vision of promoting social welfare and inclusiveness, particularly in public transportation systems such as aviation.
Implementation from Sunday
The Civil Aviation Authority has directed all domestic airlines to implement the agreed-upon discounts starting Sunday. All airline companies operating within Nepal have been instructed to update their ticketing systems and passenger information channels accordingly to ensure smooth enforcement of the new fares.
CAAN also emphasized that the fare reductions will apply to the maximum fare limits set by the authority, ensuring uniformity and transparency across different airlines. Passengers will be required to provide valid identification documents, such as citizenship certificates or disability cards, to verify eligibility for the discounted fares.
Promoting Inclusive Air Travel
This groundbreaking decision represents a major advancement toward fostering inclusive and citizen-focused aviation policies in Nepal. The initiative reflects a commitment to ensuring that all members of society can benefit from improved access to air services.
By introducing airfare concessions for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) seeks to make air travel not only more affordable but also more compassionate and accessible for everyone.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by social organizations, senior citizens’ groups, and disability rights advocates, who have long called for more equitable treatment in transportation services. Aviation experts have also lauded the move as a reflection of Nepal’s growing commitment to social responsibility and inclusive development.

A Step Toward Social Equity
The new airfare discount policy represents not just an administrative reform, but also a symbolic gesture toward social justice and equality. It acknowledges the invaluable role of senior citizens in society and seeks to empower differently-abled individuals by removing barriers to mobility.
As the directive comes into effect, CAAN has expressed its confidence that airline companies will cooperate fully in implementing the decision and ensuring that eligible passengers benefit from the policy without complications. The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reiterated its commitment to continue working toward a fair, accessible, and inclusive aviation system, one that serves the needs of every citizen, regardless of age or ability.
