The scenic hilltop of Manungkot in Byas Municipality–5, Tanahun, has been witnessing a remarkable rise in tourist arrivals as the winter season begins. The mesmerizing sunrise, misty valleys, and panoramic Himalayan views have drawn hundreds of domestic tourists daily.
Tourists Captivated by Manungkot’s Beauty
“After seeing Manungkot’s views on social media, I always wanted to visit, and it’s even more stunning in person,” said Laxmi Karki, a tourist from Pokhara. She and her friends rented a vehicle at 2:00 a.m. on Monday to reach the hilltop before sunrise. “The beauty we saw on TikTok and Facebook doesn’t compare to seeing it with our own eyes,” she added.

Similarly, Lunibha Shrestha, who traveled from Kathmandu during the Tihar holidays, said she had long wanted to visit Manungkot. “I couldn’t manage time before, but the long holidays gave me the chance. The sunrise and Himalayan views are truly captivating,” she said.
Hotels Filling Up Amid Tourist Rush
According to Sudeep Gaffar from Damauli, the number of tourists in Manungkot has surged so much that visitors now need to contact hotels in advance. “It’s hard to find accommodation if you don’t book early,” he said.
With clear skies and the start of cold weather, Manungkot currently welcomes over 1,000 visitors daily, with more than 2,000 tourists recorded on Monday morning alone, according to local sources.
Hospitality Businesses Thrive in Peak Season
Shailesh Sunam, operator of the popular Umbrella Restaurant in Manungkot, said the site has entered its peak tourist season. “Tourist numbers rise especially around Dashain and Tihar. The sunrise, fog, and sunset views attract visitors the most during this time,” he shared.
Sunam added that his restaurant can accommodate up to 70 guests per night, offering a package of Rs. 1,200 per person including lodging, dinner, and breakfast. “This is the best time to visit, but tourists are advised to reserve rooms beforehand,” he noted.
Growing Infrastructure to Support Visitors
With the steady increase in visitors, Manungkot has seen rapid hospitality growth. Once devoid of hotels, the area now boasts around a dozen hotels and lodges catering to tourists. The Byas Municipality has constructed a viewpoint tower and installed railings along the ridgeline for safety. A new pedestrian pathway has also been built to enhance the visitor experience.
From the hilltop, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, Manaslu, and Lamjung Himal. The sight of Damauli Bazaar covered in morning fog has long been associated with an ancient legend, it is said that sage Parashara Rishi created fog to conceal his union with Satyawati, linking mythology with Manungkot’s mysterious charm.
Locals Returning to Rebuild Community
The rise in tourism has not only boosted local businesses but also encouraged former residents to return. Many who had left Manungkot due to water scarcity are now reopening shops and homestays. Processed jar water and tanker supplies have solved much of the drinking water problem, making the hill habitable again.

Road Access Improves Visitor Experience
Manungkot is now accessible via a blacktopped road constructed with support from the Ministry of Urban Development. The 4.3-kilometer road from Alenche to Manungkot has been fully paved, with 180 meters of RCC concrete in challenging sections, according to the Byas Municipality Office.
With better roads, improved facilities, and social media popularity, Manungkot continues to rise as one of Tanahun’s most enchanting hill destinations, where natural beauty, myth, and modern tourism blend harmoniously.
