Located on the scenic Chure hills of Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality–4 in Banke district, the Barfani Baba Temple is rapidly developing into a promising religious and tourism destination. Situated about 30 kilometers southeast of Nepalgunj Bazaar, the temple has begun to draw increasing numbers of both domestic and international visitors in recent years.
According to former Chairperson of the Nepal Association of Tours and Travel Agents (NATTA) Banke, Shreeram Sigdel, the temple can be reached via a two-hour trek from Kumbhar, enjoying the tranquil beauty and panoramic views of the Chure landscape along the way. Sigdel emphasized the temple’s potential as a religious and eco-tourism hub, calling for greater investment in infrastructure and promotion to harness its full potential.

Infrastructure Development in Progress
Former Chairperson of Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality, Lahuram Chaudhari, described Barfani Baba Temple as a spiritually significant site with immense potential for tourism. During his tenure, approximately NPR 3 million was invested in the temple’s construction, and an additional NPR 2.8 million was allocated for road development.
Chaudhary explained that the temple area initially lacked basic amenities such as drinking water and accommodation for pilgrims. However, these facilities have now been established through local efforts and government support. Despite the progress, the site still faces challenges, particularly the absence of proper sanitation facilities and improved accessibility. “Visitors still face difficulties reaching the temple, and the lack of sufficient infrastructure remains a concern,” he added.
Preservation Efforts and Religious Significance
Barfani Baba, the chief priest of the temple, shared that the site faces difficulties each year due to fire incidents that damage the small huts (kuti) used for residence and worship. He stressed the need for constructing a protective boundary wall around the temple to safeguard it and enhance safety for devotees.
The temple holds special spiritual significance among the local community and visiting pilgrims. Devotees believe that offering prayers at Barfani Baba Temple brings inner peace and fulfills one’s wishes. The serene natural environment and the temple’s spiritual aura together make it a deeply meditative destination for those seeking both faith and tranquility.
Voices from Visitors and the Media
The temple’s growing popularity has also drawn the attention of media representatives and visitors from across Nepal and India. Indian journalist S.K. Madeshiya remarked that the natural beauty surrounding the Barfani Baba Temple was captivating, but stressed the importance of developing better access routes for pilgrims and tourists.
Local journalist Bimala Chaudhari noted that the temple’s appearance and facilities have significantly improved in recent years, transforming it from a modest shrine into a recognizable destination for religious tourism. Similarly, Harilal Neupane of the Gulmeli Sewa Samaj, Banke, shared his personal experience, saying that trekking through the pristine natural landscape to reach the temple offered “a rare sense of peace and fulfillment.”
Government Support and Future Plans
Recognizing the growing influx of visitors and the temple’s religious importance, the provincial government has been allocating annual budgets for its preservation and development. A few years ago, approximately NPR 7 million was invested in improving the drinking water system around the temple premises, further supporting visitor comfort and hygiene.
Local authorities and community organizations are now urging additional investment to build rest areas, sanitation facilities, and proper access roads to make the site more convenient and environmentally sustainable. The development of these amenities, they say, will not only enhance the visitor experience but also help promote Banke as a key destination for spiritual and adventure tourism.

A Rising Star in Banke’s Tourism Landscape
With its breathtaking natural surroundings, cultural heritage, and growing facilities, the Barfani Baba Temple is steadily emerging as one of Banke district’s most promising religious tourism sites. Pilgrims trekking through the lush Chure foothills experience both physical rejuvenation and spiritual peace, while the temple itself stands as a symbol of faith and perseverance.
As local leaders, religious figures, and provincial authorities collaborate to improve infrastructure, Barfani Baba Temple is poised to become a beacon of religious tourism, connecting faith, culture, and natural beauty in the heart of Nepal’s western plains.
