The Embassy of Nepal in Thailand has announced that the Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon will be held in Thailand in the third week of May 2026 to commemorate Buddha Jayanti 2026. The event is being organized with the primary objective of highlighting Lumbini, the sacred birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha, and strengthening Nepal’s cultural presence among international communities.
Promoting Lumbini and Nepal’s Global Identity
According to the Embassy, the Mini Marathon is expected to serve as a powerful platform for promoting Nepal’s cultural heritage, Buddhist pilgrimage sites, and tourism attractions. The event will feature two race categories, 10 km and 5 km, allowing both professional runners and general participants to take part. The Embassy stated that the initiative supports Nepal’s broader goal of enhancing global recognition of Lumbini as the cradle of Buddhism while also showcasing Nepali cuisine, cultural heritage, and exportable goods to the Thai audience and international participants.
Stakeholder Interaction Held in Bangkok
To streamline preparations and ensure the event’s success, the Embassy of Nepal in Thailand organized an interaction programme with key stakeholders on Sunday. Representatives from diverse sectors attended the meeting, reflecting strong Nepali and Thai collaboration for the upcoming marathon.
Participants included representatives from the Nepal Airlines Corporation, NRNA Thailand National Coordination Council, People of Nepali Origin Association, Thai–Nepal Association, Thai–Nepal Friendship Association, Nepali professionals working in UN agencies in Thailand, Nepali entrepreneurs, and selected Thai entrepreneurs. The meeting focused on coordination, logistical planning, and strategies to maximize the event’s promotional impact for Nepal.
Formation of Organizing Committee
During the interaction, participants agreed to form the Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon Organizing Committee, which will include representatives from organizations actively engaged in strengthening Nepal–Thailand relations. The committee will oversee race logistics, promotion, volunteer mobilization, and cultural branding leading up to the May 2026 event.
The Embassy emphasized that this collaborative effort symbolizes the long-standing friendship between Nepal and Thailand, rooted in a shared Buddhist cultural heritage. The marathon is expected not only to celebrate Buddha Jayanti in a meaningful way but also to foster goodwill, people-to-people connection, and tourism exchanges between the two nations.
Boost to Nepal’s Tourism and Cultural Diplomacy
According to the Embassy of Nepal, the marathon will significantly contribute to promoting Nepal’s tourism products, including Buddhist pilgrimage circuits, Himalayan destinations, cultural heritage sites, and adventure attractions. Moreover, showcasing Nepali culinary arts and exportable goods at the event is expected to support Nepal’s economic diplomacy efforts in the Thai market.
By engaging the Nepali diaspora, Thai communities, and international participants, the Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon aims to serve as a vibrant cultural bridge, bringing global attention to Nepal’s identity as the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a diverse tourism destination.
