The picturesque village of Ghandruk, located in Annapurna Rural Municipality–10 and 11 of Kaski district, is currently witnessing a sharp rise in tourist arrivals as the second major tourism season gains momentum. Both domestic and international visitors have begun flocking to the popular Himalayan destination in increasing numbers.

Weekend Visitor Numbers Reach New Highs

According to the Ghandruk Tourism Management Committee, weekend tourist arrivals have reached between 1,000 and 1,200 per day. On normal weekdays, the village continues to receive around 600 to 700 visitors.

Committee Chair Bikram Gurung said the trend is expected to rise further following the government’s decision to introduce a two-day weekly holiday system, which has encouraged more domestic travel. “With the second tourism season starting, we are seeing strong visitor flow. Even on regular days, arrivals remain steady,” Gurung said.

Strong Growth in Domestic and Indian Tourists

Officials from the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) noted that the Annapurna Conservation Area Project continues to see significant tourist movement through Ghandruk, especially from Indian visitors.

ACAP Area Conservation Office Chief Bhim Prasad Upadhaya said that in peak days, as many as 856 foreign tourists have entered the region in a single day. He added that both international and domestic tourism are growing steadily due to improved road access, better trekking routes, and upgraded hospitality infrastructure. “The number of Indian tourists is increasing, and domestic tourism is also flourishing,” Upadhyay said, adding that Ghandruk’s accessibility has made it a preferred destination.

Balancing Tourism Growth and Cultural Preservation

Ghandruk Ward No. 10 Chair Gautam Gurung stressed the importance of preserving the village’s cultural identity amid rapid tourism growth. He said maintaining the authenticity of the village is essential for sustaining its tourism appeal in the long run.

“The original character of the village must be preserved to keep Ghandruk competitive in the tourism market,” he said, expressing concern over the increasing number of concrete structures altering the traditional landscape. The local government is preparing a policy to encourage residents to use traditional materials and architectural styles in house construction by offering subsidies for heritage-friendly buildings.

From Early Tourism Roots to Global Destination

Tourism in Ghandruk traces back to the late 1960s when local pioneer Shankar Man Gurung helped establish its foundation as a trekking destination. Since then, the village has evolved into one of Nepal’s most recognized tourism hubs. Today, thousands of visitors from India, China, Europe, and America visit annually to experience its natural beauty and cultural richness. The village offers panoramic views of the Annapurna Massif and Machhapuchhre, which remain its main attractions.

Infrastructure Growth and Tourism Economy

According to the Tourism Management Committee, Ghandruk currently hosts around 80 hotels and 35 homestays, representing investments worth billions of rupees. The tourism industry has created employment opportunities for hundreds of locals, significantly contributing to the rural economy.

However, tourism entrepreneurs have also expressed concern that uncontrolled modernization could weaken the village’s unique identity. Rapid expansion of hotels, resorts, and concrete structures is gradually replacing traditional homes and cultural aesthetics.

Key Stop on Annapurna Trekking Routes

Ghandruk serves as an important resting point on major trekking routes within the Annapurna region, including trails connecting Annapurna Base Camp and Ghorepani–Poon Hill. The village is also accessible from Pokhara via a short drive followed by a few hours of trekking, making it one of the most convenient Himalayan destinations.

With its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and growing tourism infrastructure, Ghandruk continues to attract visitors from across the world. However, local leaders and tourism stakeholders agree that preserving its identity will be crucial to ensuring sustainable tourism in the years ahead.
