A special “Cycling for Peace” event has been launched from Kathmandu to Lumbini to mark the 2570th Buddha Jayanti this year, promoting the message of peace, compassion, and coexistence inspired by Lord Buddha’s teachings.
The journey officially began today from Swayambhu, one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, and will conclude in Lumbini on Buddha Poornima, April 30, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Organized to spread global messages of peace and harmony, the event has been coordinated in collaboration with the Nepal Tourism Board, which has been actively promoting spiritual and cultural tourism in Nepal.
108 Cyclists Join Peace Mission Across Nepal
A total of 108 cyclists are participating in this symbolic journey, which represents spiritual significance in Buddhist tradition. The cycling rally is not only a physical journey but also a spiritual campaign aimed at promoting world peace and human welfare through the values of Buddhism.
The route from Kathmandu to Lumbini passes through several culturally and naturally significant landscapes, offering participants an opportunity to experience Nepal’s diverse heritage while spreading messages of non-violence and unity. Organizers stated that the number 108 holds deep spiritual importance in Buddhism, symbolizing completeness and mindfulness, making the initiative even more meaningful.
Promoting Buddha’s Message of Compassion and Coexistence
According to the organizing committee, the main goal of the campaign is to disseminate the teachings of Lord Buddha, peace, compassion, and coexistence, to both domestic and international audiences. The participants will engage with local communities along the route, sharing messages of harmony and encouraging awareness about sustainable living and global peace. The initiative also aims to highlight Nepal’s identity as the birthplace of Buddha and strengthen its position as a leading destination for spiritual tourism.
Spiritual Leadership and Organizers’ Vision
Patron of the organizing institution and Buddhist spiritual leader Shyalpa Rinpoche emphasized that the cycling journey is dedicated to promoting global peace and humanitarian values. He stated that the participants will act as “peace ambassadors,” carrying the timeless message of Buddha across communities they pass through during the journey. According to him, such initiatives help bridge cultures and inspire individuals to adopt compassion and non-violence in daily life.
Lumbini as the Final Destination of Peace
The cycling rally will conclude in Lumbini on April 30, coinciding with Buddha Poornima celebrations. Lumbini, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Lord Buddha, will host various religious and cultural programs marking the occasion. Organizers believe that completing the journey in Lumbini will reinforce the symbolic connection between Buddha’s birthplace and the global message of peace that the event seeks to promote.
