Experts Highlight Responsible Mountaineering and Training Needs

During a preparatory interaction, Nepal’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Purna Bahadur Nepali, welcomed distinguished participants and emphasized the importance of collaboration in promoting sustainable mountain tourism.

Notably, Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala, the first Sri Lankan woman to summit Everest, shared insights on respecting the Sherpa community, challenging gender stereotypes, and adopting a “nature-first” approach in mountaineering. Experts including Dr. Mahesh Priyadharshana and adventurer Dimantha Thenuwara stressed the importance of pre-expedition training, highlighting breathing techniques and hypoxia awareness, particularly for climbers from lower-altitude regions like Sri Lanka.

Focus on Diverse Himalayan Destinations and Cultural Exchange in Sagarmatha Programme

Participants discussed expanding promotion beyond Everest to other major Himalayan destinations such as Annapurna, Makalu, and Manaslu, each offering unique biodiversity and cultural experiences. The meeting also explored deeper cultural connections, including shared Buddhist traditions between the two nations, particularly the reverence for Bodhisattva Tara. Artists proposed organizing a joint visual arts exhibition featuring Nepali and Sri Lankan creators, alongside works by internationally acclaimed photographer Dominic Sanzoni, to further strengthen cultural ties.
