The Bagmati Province government has announced plans to develop ecotourism across four major national parks in a bid to strengthen sustainable tourism and maximize the region’s natural assets.
Focus on Sustainable Tourism Development in Bagmati Province
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Bagmati Province has identified four key protected areas for targeted ecotourism development. These include Langtang National Park, Shivapuri–Nagarjun National Park, Chitwan National Park, and Parsa National Park.

Ministry Secretary Dipendra Suvedi stated that the initiative aims to establish a strong foundation for long-term, sustainable tourism development within protected areas. He emphasized that ecotourism will be promoted in a way that balances conservation with visitor experience.
Rich Biodiversity and Adventure Potential
Officials highlighted that the selected national parks are highly suitable for ecotourism due to their rich biodiversity, wildlife habitats, trekking routes, and nature-based tourism opportunities.

Langtang and Shivapuri–Nagarjun National Parks are known for their scenic trekking trails, forest ecosystems, and proximity to Kathmandu Valley, making them accessible destinations for short and medium-distance nature tourism.
Meanwhile, Chitwan National Park and Parsa National Park are recognized for their lowland biodiversity, including rare wildlife species, jungle safaris, and bird-watching experiences that attract both domestic and international tourists.

Strengthening Ecotourism Infrastructure
The provincial ministry has already begun groundwork to promote ecotourism infrastructure in these protected areas. The plan includes improving visitor facilities, promoting eco-friendly travel practices, and supporting community-based tourism initiatives in buffer zones and surrounding settlements.
Officials believe that developing ecotourism in these parks will not only enhance visitor experiences but also contribute to local livelihoods, conservation efforts, and regional economic growth.

Long-Term Vision for Nature-Based Tourism
The Bagmati Province government has positioned ecotourism as a key pillar of its tourism development strategy. By focusing on sustainable tourism practices, the province aims to protect fragile ecosystems while encouraging responsible travel behavior.
Authorities have expressed confidence that coordinated efforts between government agencies, local communities, and tourism stakeholders will help establish these national parks as leading ecotourism destinations in Nepal.
