The Government of Nepal has introduced a new online service for the tourist vehicles, aimed at facilitating smoother entry for Indian tourists and third-country visitors arriving via India. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce delays and administrative hassles at border checkpoints, improving the overall travel experience for international visitors.
The system has been developed by the Department of Customs under the Ministry of Finance and officially launched by Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle during a formal program.
End of Physical Permit Process at Border Points
With the implementation of the new system, foreign vehicles entering Nepal via land routes will no longer need to undergo the traditional physical process of obtaining temporary permits at customs offices.

Previously, tourist vehicles had to stop at border customs points to manually fill out forms and acquire temporary import permits. This often resulted in long queues, delays, and inconvenience, particularly during peak travel seasons.
The newly launched online system allows tourists to complete all required formalities, including submitting vehicle details and paying applicable revenue, digitally before arriving at the border.
QR Code-Based Entry to Streamline Movement
One of the key features of the system is the generation of a QR code upon successful submission of details and payment. Tourists can simply present this QR code, received via email, at customs checkpoints to gain entry into Nepal.
According to officials, this digital verification method will enable faster processing and eliminate paperwork. Vehicles carrying tourists can then proceed directly to their destinations without unnecessary delays.
The Department of Customs stated that the QR code will serve as a valid travel document for the vehicle throughout its stay in Nepal, and authorities across the country will recognize it during inspections.
Online Renewal Facility Adds Flexibility
In addition to simplifying entry procedures, the system also allows tourists to extend their vehicle permit duration online. Previously, travelers were required to revisit customs offices at border points to renew permits or risk facing penalties.
Now, visitors can extend their travel duration from anywhere within Nepal using the same digital platform. This added flexibility is expected to enhance convenience for tourists exploring multiple destinations across the country.

Accessing the Service Through Official Portal
To use the service, tourists must visit the official website of the Department of Customs and navigate to the “Our Services” section, where the Temporary Import of Vehicles (TIV) module is available.
Users are required to fill in the necessary details online. Once all information is submitted and verified, a QR code containing complete vehicle and travel information is generated. Upon payment of applicable fees, either online or through designated bank counters, vehicles are permitted to enter Nepal.
Developed Under National Single Window System
The online system has been introduced as part of Nepal’s broader “National Single Window” initiative, aimed at modernizing trade and transit procedures through digital transformation.
Officials say the Temporary Import of Vehicles (TIV) module has been specifically designed to facilitate foreign tourists entering Nepal by road, making the process more efficient, transparent, and user-friendly.
Immediate Benefits for Indian and Regional Tourists
Currently, the service is applicable to Indian tourists and third-country nationals entering Nepal via India. The Department of Customs clarified that although tourist arrivals via Chinese land routes are currently limited, the system will also be extended to such travelers when applicable.
Authorities believe that the new system will particularly benefit tourists from India and Bangladesh, who frequently travel to Nepal by road.
Government Aims to Boost Tourism Experience
Speaking at the launch, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle expressed confidence that the initiative would eliminate long-standing inconveniences faced by tourists at border points.

He emphasized that the government is committed to improving the ease of travel and strengthening Nepal’s position as a tourist-friendly destination.
Step Toward Digital Transformation in Tourism
The introduction of the online vehicle entry system marks a significant step in Nepal’s efforts to modernize its tourism infrastructure. By leveraging digital tools, the government aims to create a more seamless and welcoming experience for international visitors.
Officials remain optimistic that the initiative will not only enhance border management efficiency but also contribute to increased tourist arrivals and overall growth in Nepal’s tourism sector.
