The ceremony formally began with the playing of the National Anthem of Nepal in the Nepal Embassy in Copenhagen, followed by the National Anthem of the Kingdom of Denmark, symbolizing mutual respect and diplomatic friendship between the two nations. Earlier in the day, a flag hoisting ceremony was held at the embassy premises to commemorate Republic Day, marking Nepal’s historic transition to a federal democratic republic.

To honor the 73rd International Sagarmatha Day, a video message from Hon’ble Mr. Shisir Khanal, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal, was presented during the program, highlighting the global importance of Mount Everest and Nepal’s role in preserving its Himalayan identity.

Delivering her welcome remarks, Ms. Sabitra Oli, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Nepal in Copenhagen, emphasized the significance of Republic Day as a historic milestone that reflects the decision of Nepal’s first Constituent Assembly to establish a federal democratic republic.

She extended congratulations and warm wishes to Nepali nationals and the broader diaspora residing across Nordic and Baltic countries. Ms. Oli also paid tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs and the contributions of the Nepali people, which ensured that sovereignty rests with the citizens.

Significance of International Sagarmatha Day

Highlighting the importance of International Sagarmatha (Everest) Day, Ms. Sabitra Oli, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Nepal in Copenhagen, noted that Nepal’s decision to celebrate May 29 as Sagarmatha Day honors the historic first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.

She described the observance as a celebration of human courage, resilience, determination, Sherpa heritage, environmental stewardship, and Nepal’s unique mountain tourism identity. Referring to the 73rd edition of the celebration under the slogan “Sagarmatha: Identity and Pride of Nepal,” she underlined its cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance for Nepal and the world.

Climate Action and Sagarmatha Dialogue

Ms. Oli also highlighted Nepal’s growing leadership in global climate discourse, recalling the successful hosting of the first edition of the Sagarmatha Sambad (Everest Dialogue) in Kathmandu from 16–18 May 2025. The dialogue, held under the theme “Climate Change, Mountains and Future of Humanity,” concluded with the adoption of a 25-point Sagarmatha Call for Action. She stressed that protecting fragile mountain ecosystems requires shared global commitment and collective responsibility, urging participants to support climate action efforts that safeguard Himalayan regions and their ecological balance.

Tourism Promotion and Cultural Showcase

On the occasion, the Chargé d’Affaires also highlighted Nepal’s vast tourism potential, inviting participants to visit Nepal and experience its natural beauty, cultural diversity, and adventure opportunities. The program featured a special video presentation showcasing Nepal’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant traditions, and adventure tourism highlights, designed to promote Nepal as a leading global travel destination.
