Sri Lanka’s Mattala International Airport Incurring Daily Losses of Rs. 6–7 Million

Sri Lanka’s Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) is currently incurring daily losses of approximately Rs. 6–7 million, resulting in annual losses of nearly Rs. 4 billion.

The issue was brought to the attention of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during a special discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday, July 15.

Review Held on Aviation Programmes and Future Budget

The disclosure was made during a review meeting on the progress of programmes being implemented by the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation for 2026, as well as proposed budget allocations for 2027.

The meeting also reviewed the current financial position of the aviation sector and the challenges facing the country’s airports. Officials briefed the President on the financial situation of Mattala International Airport and the urgent need to improve its operational and financial performance.

Investment Proposals Invited to Improve Airport’s Financial Performance

According to officials, investment proposals have already been invited to improve the financial performance and future operations of Mattala International Airport.

The evaluation and selection process for the proposals is currently underway and is expected to be completed by 2027. The proposed investments are expected to focus on improving the airport’s operational efficiency, increasing revenue-generating activities and reducing the financial burden caused by its continuing losses.

Government Seeks Sustainable Operating Model

During the discussion, the need to identify sustainable investment opportunities and implement operational improvements was emphasized. The government is seeking ways to enhance the long-term viability of the airport while reducing the losses it currently incurs.

Officials also highlighted the importance of developing a financially sustainable operating model for the airport through new investment, improved management and increased utilization of its infrastructure.

The discussion formed part of a broader review of Sri Lanka’s aviation sector, including ongoing programmes, future investments and budgetary requirements. The President was briefed on the challenges facing the sector and the need for effective planning to improve the performance of aviation-related infrastructure.

The government is now expected to focus on attracting suitable investment and introducing operational reforms to strengthen Mattala International Airport and reduce its annual financial losses.
