Boeing has secured major aircraft commitments from leading aviation customers, with SMBC Aviation Capital placing its first order for the highest-capacity variant of the 737 MAX family and Philippine Airlines (PAL) committing to acquire up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The deals highlight continued demand for fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft as airlines and lessors seek to expand and modernise their fleets amid long-term growth in global air travel.
SMBC Aviation Capital Places First 737-10 Order
The order for the Boeing 737-10 marks SMBC Aviation Capital’s first purchase of the largest variant in the 737 MAX family. With the latest transaction, the lessor’s portfolio of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including owned, managed, and committed aircraft, will reach 450 jets.
Peter Barrett, CEO of SMBC Aviation Capital, said the transaction represented a significant milestone for the company and would help ensure that its airline customers have access to a long-term pipeline of new-technology aircraft. He said the order reflected changing market dynamics as airline and investor customers increasingly seek larger single-aisle aircraft to support their growth plans. The transaction also reflects SMBC Aviation Capital’s confidence in the 737 MAX family and sustained market demand for fuel-efficient and technologically advanced narrowbody aircraft.
737-10 Offers Capacity of Up to 230 Passengers
The Boeing 737-10 can accommodate up to 230 passengers and has a range of approximately 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 kilometres). According to Plane, the aircraft offers the best per-seat economics among single-aisle aircraft. The larger-capacity variant is designed to meet demand for aircraft capable of carrying more passengers while maintaining the efficiency of a narrowbody jet. For SMBC Aviation Capital, the acquisition will allow the company to respond to growing demand for larger single-aisle aircraft, diversify its aircraft portfolio, and expand its customer base.

She said SMBC Aviation Capital’s first 737-10 order reflected strong demand for the aircraft family’s efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility.
The order comes as aircraft lessors increasingly seek to expand and diversify their single-aisle portfolios to meet the needs of airlines operating across a wide range of route networks. With global passenger traffic forecast to grow by approximately 4 percent annually over the next two decades, demand for fuel-efficient aircraft is expected to remain strong. According to Boeing, lessors have ordered more than 1,450 737 MAX aircraft, representing approximately 20 percent of the family’s total backlog.
Philippine Airlines Commits to Up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners
In another major Boeing deal announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, Philippine Airlines committed to ordering up to 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The agreement includes a firm commitment for 15 Boeing 787-10 aircraft, with an option to purchase five additional aircraft. Once finalised, the deal will support Philippine Airlines’ fleet modernisation and expansion plans, particularly across its medium- and long-haul operations.
New Dreamliners to Support PAL’s Long-Term Growth
Lucio C. Tan III, President and Chief Operating Officer of PAL Holdings, said the investment reflected the airline’s confidence in the future of Philippine Airlines and the continued growth of air travel. He said the Boeing 787-10 would strengthen the airline’s medium- and long-haul fleet while helping improve the passenger experience, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability of the airline.
Philippine Airlines, which describes itself as Asia’s first and longest-serving airline, celebrated its 85th anniversary earlier this year. The airline also marked 80 years of partnership with Boeing, making the latest Dreamliner commitment another significant milestone in the longstanding relationship between the two companies. The two major aircraft deals underscore the continuing global demand for modern, fuel-efficient aircraft as airlines and aircraft lessors prepare for long-term growth in passenger traffic and seek to improve fleet efficiency.
