Air New Zealand is expanding its international network from Christchurch with plans to launch new direct services to Singapore, Tokyo and Perth. The expansion follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport and is expected to significantly increase the number of international seats available from the South Island’s largest city.
New Services to Connect Christchurch with Asia and Australia
Under the expansion plan, Air New Zealand will operate the three new international routes using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The new services will collectively add more than 92,000 seats to Christchurch Airport’s international network, giving travelers greater access to major destinations in Asia and Australia. The planned launch dates are:
- Christchurch–Singapore: Three flights per week from October 28
- Christchurch–Tokyo Narita: From November 28
- Christchurch–Perth: From November 30
The additional services are expected to improve travel options for both outbound passengers from New Zealand and international visitors arriving in Christchurch.
Boost to Tourism and International Connectivity
The new routes are expected to strengthen Christchurch’s position as an international gateway to the South Island of New Zealand. Direct air links with Singapore, Tokyo and Perth could make it easier for international travelers to reach Christchurch without relying as heavily on connecting services through other New Zealand or overseas airports.
The expanded connectivity is also expected to support tourism, business travel and trade, providing greater access to Christchurch and destinations across the wider South Island. For the tourism industry, improved international air access can help attract visitors from key Asian and Australian markets while providing New Zealand travelers with more convenient options for overseas trips.

The addition of the three routes represents a significant expansion of Christchurch Airport’s international network and strengthens its links with important aviation markets. Operating the routes with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will also provide substantial passenger capacity while extending Air New Zealand’s international reach from Christchurch.
