The Government of Nepal has formally designated the Ram Janaki Temple area in Janakpurdham as a protected monument zone, marking a significant step toward safeguarding the historic temple and its surrounding heritage. The decision was taken by the Council of Ministers under the Ancient Monument Preservation Act, 2013. The Department of Printing has officially published the decision in the Nepal Gazette, confirming the designated boundaries of the protected area.
Four Boundaries Set for the Protected Zone
The government has defined the protected area by establishing boundaries along roads and the traditional circumambulation route surrounding the temple. The eastern boundary runs from Bhanu Chowk and Kadam Chowk through the District Administration Office and Land Revenue Office toward the southern section of the circumambulation route.
On the western side, the boundary extends from Bhamarpura Chowk through Yagyavalkya Sanskrit Secondary School, Gyan Kupa and Hanuman Temple toward the northern circumambulation route. The northern boundary covers the section from Hanuman Temple and Pidari Chowk, including the Raja Janak Memorial, toward the Madhesh Province Government building, Mills Area and Bhanu Chowk. The southern boundary extends from Murali Chowk, near the Vidyapati Memorial, to Bhamarpura Chowk.
Heritage Protection to Shape Future Development
The protected status means development and construction activities within the designated area will have to follow heritage conservation requirements.
The move is intended to help maintain the historic character of the temple and its surrounding landscape while placing greater emphasis on controlled development.
For Janakpurdham, the decision has wider significance for religious and cultural tourism. Ram Janaki Temple is one of the city’s principal pilgrimage attractions and draws visitors because of its association with Sita, the Mithila tradition and the Ramayana. By placing the temple and its surroundings under a formal conservation framework, the government is also creating a stronger foundation for managing the area as a heritage and pilgrimage destination.
Move Linked to UNESCO World Heritage Goal
The protected monument declaration is part of Nepal’s broader effort to pursue UNESCO World Heritage status for Ram Janaki Temple. The government has included the objective in its current policies and budget, while heritage authorities have been working on the necessary conservation and management framework. The latest decision provides a formal protection framework for the temple and its immediate surroundings, which is an important part of preparing a heritage site for possible international recognition.
With its religious significance, Mithila cultural identity and long-standing pilgrimage tradition, Ram Janaki Temple remains a major attraction for visitors to Janakpurdham. The new protected status is expected to support its long-term conservation while strengthening the city’s position as an important destination for religious, cultural and heritage tourism.
