KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-900, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s long-haul fleet modernization program. The newly delivered aircraft, registered PH-ZNA, brings the latest generation of aircraft technology to KLM’s long-haul operations. The aircraft features several upgraded passenger amenities designed to improve comfort, connectivity, and the overall in-flight experience.
Among the new features are electronically dimmable cabin lighting, Panasonic Astrova inflight entertainment systems, and Viasat high-speed connectivity. These systems are intended to provide passengers with a more personalized cabin environment, enhanced entertainment options, and faster access to online services during flights.

A350 to Support Long-Haul Fleet Renewal
The introduction of the Airbus A350-900 forms part of Airbus’s broader effort to renew and modernize its long-haul fleet. The new-generation A350 aircraft are expected to gradually replace KLM’s existing Airbus A330s and some Boeing 777-200ERs over the coming years. The fleet transition is expected to provide the airline with more modern aircraft while supporting improvements in operational efficiency and passenger comfort.
The Airbus A350 is designed as a modern long-haul aircraft, incorporating advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials and newer-generation engines. Its introduction will allow KLM to strengthen the technological capabilities of its intercontinental fleet as the airline continues its fleet renewal. For passengers, the transition will also mean access to newer cabin features and an updated in-flight experience on routes operated by the A350.

First A350 Named After Rembrandt Masterpiece
In keeping with KLM’s long-standing tradition of naming its aircraft after works of Dutch art, the airline has given its first A350 the name “The Night Watch.” The name pays tribute to Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn’s famous painting The Night Watch, one of the most recognizable works of Dutch art.
The choice reflects KLM’s practice of connecting its aircraft fleet with Dutch culture and heritage. By naming its first A350 after one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated artworks, the airline has combined its latest aircraft technology with a distinctly Dutch identity.
Second A350 to Honor Vermeer
KLM’s second Airbus A350-900, registered PH-ZNB, will continue the same artistic naming tradition. The aircraft will be named “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” after the renowned painting by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. The two aircraft names link KLM’s newest generation of long-haul aircraft with two internationally recognized masterpieces of Dutch art, reinforcing the airline’s cultural identity as it enters a new phase of fleet development.

New Chapter for KLM’s Long-Haul Operations
The arrival of the first A350-900 marks a new chapter in KLM’s long-haul fleet strategy. The aircraft combines modern aviation technology with upgraded passenger facilities and KLM’s distinctive Dutch branding. As additional A350s join the fleet, the aircraft type is expected to play an increasingly important role in KLM’s long-haul operations. The gradual replacement of older aircraft will support the airline’s efforts to operate a more modern fleet while enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
With the delivery of PH-ZNA, KLM has begun introducing one of the latest generations of wide-body aircraft into its long-haul network. The combination of advanced technology, high-speed connectivity and improved cabin features is expected to make the A350 an important part of the airline’s future international operations.
