Malaysia Airlines leverages Weixin presence to enhance customer engagement

Malaysia Airlines is currently leveraging the Weixin Official Account and Weixin Channels to interact with travelling customers and showcase the airline’s destinations and services in China. The new partnership, however, is expected to enable the company to enhance its relationship with Chinese customers by providing the Weixin environment with a more integrated offering of travel related content and services through the planned Mini Program.

Under the MoU, Malaysia Airlines and Weixin Pay will conduct joint promotional and engagement campaigns through Weixin Pay, Channels, and Official Accounts and utilise social sharing tools, complemented by the airline’s marketing tools, to enhance the discoverability of the Mini Program. The initiatives are expected to contribute to a higher rate of audience outreach, increased brand awareness, and enable greater levels of engagement.

Weixin Mini Program expected to provide more booking convenience

The Weixin Mini Program is expected to become another digital access channel for Chinese travellers to utilise in accessing Malaysia Airlines’ network of destinations. By integrating promotional opportunities and destination information within the Weixin environment, the programme will reduce the distance between the travel experience and the booking process.

Dersenish Aresandiran, Chief Commercial Officer of Airline Business at Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), said that the airline’s existing Weixin presence has enabled it to strengthen its relationship with Chinese travellers. He added that the cooperation with Weixin Pay would enable the company to build upon its engagement with the region while preparing for the launch of a Mini Program that is designed around the needs of customers in China.

Air connectivity with China to be expanded further

Malaysia Airlines currently connects China with its network of destinations through Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Changsha, and Hong Kong and Taipei. The company is set to expand on its current air connectivity with China by combining it with a greater localised digital footprint, providing Chinese travellers with an easier way to discover and book journeys to Malaysia and destinations beyond.

Further enhancements are also expected to be introduced through Malaysia Airlines’ sister carrier Firefly, which intends to introduce daily Kuala Lumpur Kunming flights, subject to regulatory approval. The additional leg, combined with the digital footprint offered by Malaysia Airlines, is expected to offer Chinese customers greater flexibility when considering travel between China and Malaysia, or Malaysia and elsewhere.

Partnership set to expand customer coverage and booking accessibility

Ben Yang, Managing Director of Weixin Pay for Southeast Asia, North America and LATAM, said that the MoU would enable the combined reach of the Weixin ecosystem and marketing resources of Malaysia Airlines to enable a greater number of Chinese customers to discover the airline’s destinations and offers. Additionally, the partnership will provide greater convenience for customers that wish to make use of the airline’s booking services through a digital channel that is already familiar to them.
