A new suspension bridge, named ‘Lawakush,’ was officially opened on Monday, marking a significant development for the region. Spanning approximately 535 meters across the Narayani River, this bridge connects Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality-6 in Nawalpur (Nawalparasi, Bardaghat Susta East) and Madi Municipality-1 in Chitwan.
Constructed by the Rubina-Mana JB Joint Venture Company at a cost of Rs 60 million, the bridge comes two years after its completion in 2079 BS, following its initiation in 2070 BS. Its construction faced delays due to its location within the Chitwan National Park command area on the Chitwan side.
The Lawakush Bridge is set to revolutionize access to the Balmiki Ashram, a significant religious site located in Madi Municipality-1. Previously, visitors had to navigate a complex and lengthy route via India, crossing the Gandak Barrage at Triveni and traveling through Valmikinagar and the Valmeeki Tiger Reserve in India to reach the ashram.
With the bridge now operational, travelers can access the Balmiki Ashram directly from Triveni within Nepal, significantly reducing travel time and eliminating the need to traverse Indian territory. Tilak Mahat, a former lawmaker from Nawalpur, emphasized the importance of the bridge, stating it will enhance local travel, boost regional development, and support the conservation and promotion of this key spiritual destination.
The bridge’s opening is anticipated to benefit not only devotees visiting the ashram but also the broader community by improving connectivity and fostering regional growth.
