Api Himal Tourism Festival 2083 Begins in Darchula to Promote Mountain Tourism

The three-day Api Himal Tourism Festival 2083 has begun in Darchula with the objective of promoting the tourism potential of the Api Himal region and showcasing its natural, religious and cultural heritage to domestic and international visitors. The festival is being held at Pilkand in Api Himal Rural Municipality-1, near the Api Himal Base Camp. The rural municipality has organized the event as part of its broader campaign to establish the region as a prominent tourism destination and generate employment and income opportunities for local communities.

Promoting Api Himal’s Natural and Cultural Heritage

The Api Himal region is home to a range of natural, religious and cultural attractions, including Api Himal, Kalidhunga, Richharde, Bayeli Lake, Dharmi Cave, Markandeya Cave, the source of the Chameliya River and vast alpine pastures. The local government aims to use the festival as a platform to increase awareness of these attractions and attract more visitors to the region. It expects increased tourism activity to benefit local communities through greater demand for accommodation, food, transportation, agricultural products, handicrafts and other locally produced goods.

Tourism Festival to Go Beyond Entertainment

Api Himal Rural Municipality Chair Bhakt Singh Thekare Bohara said the festival is not limited to entertainment and cultural performances but is part of an initiative to introduce the identity and tourism potential of Api Himal to the outside world. He said the rural municipality aims to strengthen the local economy through tourism development while creating employment opportunities for young people within the community.

Cultural Performances and Sports Events Planned

A range of activities have been scheduled throughout the three-day festival, including cultural processions, literary programmes, performances by national and local artists, friendly cricket and volleyball competitions, yoga and meditation sessions, and discussions on climate change.

The combination of cultural, sporting and environmental activities is intended to provide visitors with a broader experience of the region while highlighting its cultural identity and environmental significance.

Focus on Visitor Facilities and Local Products

The organizers have prioritized accommodation, information services, health facilities and security arrangements for visitors attending the festival. The event is also expected to provide an opportunity to expand the market for local products. Local entrepreneurs and business owners expect an increase in tourist arrivals to create greater demand for homestays, hotels, agricultural products, handicrafts and cottage industries.

Api Himal Targets 10,000 Tourists This Fiscal Year

The rural municipality has set a target of attracting 10,000 tourists during the current fiscal year. The target is nearly double the more than 5,000 visitors who have reportedly been visiting the area annually in recent years. Officials believe improved tourism promotion and greater exposure of the region’s attractions can help increase visitor numbers and generate economic opportunities for local communities.

Year-Round Tourism Remains a Challenge

However, local authorities acknowledge that increasing tourist activity during the three days of the festival alone will not be sufficient to achieve the desired tourism targets. The rural municipality faces the challenge of developing and maintaining year-round tourism infrastructure, accommodation, information services, transportation and safety facilities. Sustained investment and promotion beyond the festival period will be essential to transform Api Himal into a year-round tourism destination and ensure that increased visitor numbers translate into lasting economic benefits for local communities.
