PATA and Azerbaijan Tourism Board Join Hands to Expand Asia Pacific Tourism

The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board (ATB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen tourism connections between Azerbaijan and the Asia Pacific region, expand international source markets and create new business opportunities for the travel industry. The agreement, signed in Baku on October 29, establishes a framework for cooperation in destination promotion, travel trade engagement, media outreach and tourism knowledge exchange.

The partnership aims to increase Azerbaijan’s visibility among travellers across selected Asia Pacific markets while connecting its tourism businesses with regional travel professionals, media representatives and industry stakeholders. The signing took place during the PATA Hosted Buyers Baku 2026 Summit, organised under the theme Pacific Asia Meets Azerbaijan: From Source Market to Destination. The agreement was signed by PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid and Azerbaijan Tourism Board CEO Florian Sengstschmid, in the presence of PATA Chairman Henry Oh and Fuad Naghiyev, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

PATA and Azerbaijan Strengthen Tourism Market Cooperation

The new partnership brings together PATA’s extensive Asia Pacific network and tourism industry expertise with the Azerbaijan Tourism Board’s destination promotion and development initiatives. Through this collaboration, both organisations will explore ways to connect Azerbaijan with travel trade partners, tourism businesses and media across selected markets in Asia Pacific. PATA Chairman Henry Oh said the partnership was designed to connect Azerbaijan with key source markets across the region and translate the destination’s tourism potential into tangible business opportunities.

He highlighted the importance of bringing destinations, tourism businesses and travel trade partners together to develop market connections, exchange knowledge and strengthen international tourism cooperation. PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid also emphasised the opportunities available in Asia Pacific for destinations seeking to reach new audiences and establish stronger relationships with the travel trade. He said the collaboration would provide a platform to raise awareness of Azerbaijan, share market insights and connect the destination with travel professionals familiar with regional traveller interests and expectations.

Azerbaijan Targets Growing Asia Pacific Tourism Markets

Azerbaijan is seeking to strengthen its presence in Asia Pacific, which offers opportunities to attract more international visitors and diversify its tourism source markets. The country has been increasing its engagement with the region through destination promotion, travel trade partnerships and improved market access. Fuad Naghiyev, Chairman of the State Tourism Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, said Asia Pacific was an important market for the country’s tourism sector. He highlighted the opening of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board’s representative office in Beijing earlier in 2026 as a significant step towards expanding its regional presence.

He also noted that hosting the PATA Hosted Buyers Baku 2026 Summit had brought international tourism professionals together with Azerbaijani businesses, creating opportunities for direct industry connections and new commercial partnerships. Azerbaijan Tourism Board CEO Florian Sengstschmid said visitor arrivals from Pacific Asia continued to grow, supported by visa-free travel arrangements with China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. He described the MoU, signed during PATA’s 75th anniversary year, as an important milestone in the partnership and expressed hope that it would encourage more travellers between the participating markets.

Four Key Areas of Cooperation Under the MoU

The agreement identifies four major areas through which PATA and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board will explore joint initiatives:

  • Source Market Development and Destination Promotion: Strengthening Azerbaijan’s visibility and promoting its tourism experiences among selected Asia Pacific markets.
  • Travel Trade Engagement and Business Development: Connecting Azerbaijani tourism suppliers with regional travel agencies, tour operators and other industry partners.
  • Media Engagement and Destination Awareness: Expanding destination exposure through media cooperation and communication channels.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Industry Engagement: Encouraging the exchange of tourism insights, industry expertise and market information to support tourism development.

Through these areas, the organisations intend to create opportunities for stronger business relationships and more effective destination marketing across the region.

PATA Hosted Buyers Baku 2026 Builds International Business Connections

The MoU builds on the initiative Pacific Asia Meets Azerbaijan: From Source Market to Destination, through which PATA and the Azerbaijan Tourism Board have been working to strengthen tourism links between Azerbaijan and selected Asia Pacific markets. As part of the initiative, PATA collaborated with ATB to invite travel trade buyers and media representatives from the region to participate in a familiarisation (FAM) trip to Azerbaijan. The programme culminated in the PATA Hosted Buyers Baku 2026 Summit, which brought together buyers from China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Republic of Korea with Azerbaijani tourism suppliers.

The summit provided a platform for participants to explore Azerbaijan’s tourism offerings, exchange market knowledge, establish business relationships and identify potential opportunities for cooperation. By combining destination familiarisation with direct industry engagement, the initiative aims to build stronger connections between Azerbaijan’s tourism sector and the Asia Pacific travel market. The new MoU is expected to extend these efforts beyond the summit by providing a longer-term framework for cooperation, destination promotion and travel trade development. It also reflects the growing importance of international partnerships in diversifying tourism markets and creating new opportunities for cross-regional travel.
