Janakpur-Ayodhya Special Train Service Nears Launch to Boost Ramayana Circuit Tourism

Preparations for a special railway service connecting Janakpurdham in Nepal with Ayodhya in India have reached the final stage, paving the way for improved cross-border travel and religious tourism between the two countries. The proposed service is expected to be jointly inaugurated by the Prime Ministers of Nepal and India during Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah’s scheduled visit to India from Mangsir 6.

The railway connection is expected to strengthen the Ramayana Circuit by linking two important destinations associated with the Hindu epic Ramayana: Janakpurdham, traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Goddess Sita, and Ayodhya, regarded as the birthplace of Lord Ram. The service is expected to make pilgrimage travel more convenient while creating new opportunities for tourism, cultural exchange and local businesses on both sides of the border.

Cross-Border Railway Preparations Reach Final Stage

According to Nepal Railway Company Managing Director Paribesh Parajuli, railway, customs and security officials from Nepal and India are holding discussions to finalise the operational arrangements for the proposed special train service. As part of the preparations, officials from both countries have inspected the Jaynagar–Janakpurdham–Kurtha railway section to assess its readiness for the planned cross-border operation. The ongoing coordination is focused on addressing key requirements, including railway operations, passenger movement, customs formalities and security arrangements, to ensure a smooth and convenient journey for pilgrims and other passengers travelling between the two destinations.

The proposed joint inauguration during Prime Minister Balen Shah’s visit to India is expected to give further momentum to bilateral cooperation in railway connectivity, religious tourism and cultural exchange. The initiative also reflects the shared interest of Nepal and India in strengthening transport links between destinations of religious and historical significance. While the preparations have entered their final stage, the commencement of regular services, including the operating schedule and other passenger-related details, will be determined after the two countries complete the remaining technical and administrative arrangements.

Janakpurdham and Ayodhya to Be Connected Through Ramayana Circuit

The proposed train service will connect Janakpurdham in Nepal’s Madhesh Province with Ayodhya in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, two destinations of major religious and cultural importance for Hindu pilgrims. Janakpurdham is closely associated with Goddess Sita and the Ramayana tradition, while Ayodhya is revered as the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Their connection through the railway service is expected to strengthen the Ramayana Circuit, a broader religious tourism concept linking important destinations associated with the life and story of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. By improving transport access between these pilgrimage centres, the service could encourage more visitors from Nepal, India and other countries to explore religious and cultural attractions in both destinations. It may also make cross-border pilgrimage journeys more convenient for families, tour groups and religious travellers.

Railway Connectivity Expected to Boost Religious Tourism and Local Businesses

The special train service is expected to provide a significant opportunity to expand religious tourism between Nepal and India. Easier connectivity between Janakpurdham and Ayodhya could encourage pilgrimage tours, cultural visits and organised travel packages, while strengthening the historical, religious and people-to-people ties shared by the two countries.

The increased movement of pilgrims and visitors could also benefit local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport operators, travel agencies, shops and other tourism-related services. Janakpurdham, in particular, could gain from greater visitor arrivals as the city strengthens its position as an important destination for Ramayana-related religious tourism. The proposed railway connection represents an important step towards improving cross-border tourism infrastructure and promoting shared cultural heritage. Once operational arrangements are finalised, the service is expected to offer pilgrims a more convenient travel option while supporting tourism cooperation and economic opportunities in the Nepal-India border region.
