Adverse Weather Conditions Impact Domestic Flights in Nepal

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, domestic flights across Nepal have been partially affected. Internal flights from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) have experienced disruptions, though Visual Flight Rules (VFR) operations are ongoing at the Kathmandu airport. However, flights to destinations outside Kathmandu, such as Biratnagar and Simara, have been impacted.

According to TIA spokesperson Rinzee Sherpa, two flights were diverted due to deteriorating “en route weather.” A Yeti Airlines flight bound for Simara had to return to Kathmandu after being unable to land, and another Yeti Airlines flight headed for Biratnagar turned back midway due to worsening weather conditions.

As a result of the adverse weather, all mountain flights (mountain sightseeing tours) scheduled for today have been canceled, according to airline officials. However, international flights remain unaffected and are operating as scheduled.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division reported that the monsoon trough is located south of its average position, contributing to monsoon activity across the country. Additionally, a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal is partially affecting Nepal’s weather, leading to cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall in various parts of the country, including Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim provinces, with some areas experiencing thunderstorms and lightning.
