Government Opens 57 New Peaks for Climbing

The Nepalese government has announced the opening of 57 new peaks for climbing, following a decision made during the Cabinet meeting on Ashwin 21. This approval allows for a total of 75 new peaks to be opened for climbers.

The Department of Tourism had recommended the opening of these new climbing opportunities to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation. Based on this proposal, the Cabinet has granted permission for the ascents. The newly opened peaks range in height from over 5,000 meters to 5,500 meters, enhancing the accessibility of Nepal’s majestic mountains.

Rakesh Gurung, Director of the Department of Tourism, stated that with the addition of these 57 peaks, the total number of mountains open for climbing in Nepal now stands at 461. He emphasized that this initiative sends a positive message for the development of mountain tourism in the country.

Nima Nuru Sherpa, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), expressed optimism regarding the decision to open new peaks. “Opening mountains means developing new destinations,” he said, noting that there are over 2,000 climbable peaks in Nepal that should be progressively opened for climbing.

Sherpa highlighted the need to attract more tourists by opening as many climbable peaks as possible. He also suggested that infrastructure development, including better access to the newly opened peaks, should accompany the climbing opportunities.

The government’s approach aligns with its policy of gradually opening climbable peaks, as indicated in the budget for the fiscal year 2080/81. This strategic move is anticipated to boost Nepal’s tourism sector and enhance the country’s reputation as a premier destination for mountaineers.
