In a boost for tourism and Nepal-China relations, Sichuan Airlines operated its second chartered flight to Pokhara International Airport today. Since the airport’s inauguration nearly two years ago, this marks the eighth international flight to the facility.
According to Information Officer Jasoda Subedi at Pokhara International Airport, the Sichuan Airlines Airbus A319 landed with 120 passengers at 2:00 p.m. and departed for Kunming, China, at 3:40 p.m. Despite these chartered flights, regular commercial international flights have yet to commence at the airport, which was inaugurated on January 1, 2023.
Sichuan Airlines first conducted a chartered flight to Pokhara on June 21, 2023, and today’s flight, the second in 17 months, brought Chinese delegates, athletes, and spectators to participate in the upcoming Third Pokhara International Mountain Cross-Country Race, set to begin on November 9, 2024. The event, themed “Run for Shared Prosperity,” aims to foster cultural and sporting ties between Nepal and China, featuring athletes from both countries.
The marathon, organized by the Nepal Tourism Board, the Gandaki Province government, and Pokhara Metropolitan City, will be implemented by the Himalayan Tourism Forum and run through November 10, 2024. Chinese institutions, including the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, Yunnan Provincial Sports Bureau, and Silk Road Cities Alliance, are also supporting the event.
According to the Himalayan Tourism Forum, the Chinese athletes and officials traveled from Kunming to Pokhara via today’s chartered flight, underscoring the importance of this event in strengthening the tourism and cultural ties between the two nations.
