Body of Missing Guide Found in Mardi Himal During Trekking Expedition

The body of Lal Bahadur Tamang, a guide who went missing after falling during a Mardi Himal expedition in Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality, has been recovered. Tamang, 62, from Khalte-1 in Nuwakot, went missing on Kartik 25 (November 10) during a trek with a group organized by Kathmandu-based Sunrise Company. The team, which included a foreign tourist and four Nepali assistants, had set out from the Mardi Base Camp on Kartik 23.

According to Hari Bahadur Chhetri, the Ward Chair of Machhapuchhre-9, a rescue team discovered Tamang’s body at an altitude of 5,300 meters. The rescue team, led by Lakpa Chhiring Sherpa, included members Chhiring Lama Bhote and Pasang Sherpa. The team managed to safely recover Tamang’s body, which was trapped in a snow-covered crevice, using ropes to lift it about 200 meters to a secure location near the camp. Due to the challenging terrain, Chhetri indicated that the body could only be airlifted by helicopter, and efforts are currently underway to arrange for the transportation.

The Norwegian client on the trek had reported Tamang’s disappearance to Prestige Burlakoti, a porter in the group, prompting a rescue operation. On Tuesday morning, security personnel, three Sherpas, Tamang’s family, and representatives from Sunrise Company reached Mardi High Camp from Pokhara to aid in the search.

Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to Mardi’s rugged terrain and adverse weather, Chhetri reported. Initial reconnaissance was conducted by helicopter, but rescue teams ultimately reached the site on foot to attempt the recovery.
