Increase in Migratory Birds in Kanchanpur-Kailali Wetlands Amidst Cold Weather

As the cold intensifies in the northern regions, the number of migratory birds visiting the wetlands of Kanchanpur and Kailali has significantly increased. According to Hiralal Dagora, a member of Bird Conservation Nepal (BCN), the birds have arrived in search of safe habitats and food due to the snowfall and dropping temperatures in areas like Siberia.

The wetlands of Kanchanpur and Kailali have seen the arrival of various bird species, including the Mallard, Green-winged Teal, Kalij Pheasant, Swamp Francolin, Red-wattled Lapwing, and the Great Egret, among others. Dagora highlighted that many migratory birds from regions like Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan come to these areas to escape the harsh cold.

Notable areas where these birds have been spotted include the Ghoda Ghodi Lake and Karnali River region in Kailali, Puranai Lake and Kalikich Wetlands in Kanchanpur, as well as the Salgoudi Lake, Ranital, Sikarital, Mahakali River, and Chauraha River within the Suklaphanta National Park. These wetlands provide essential resources for the birds as they migrate from colder climates to warmer regions.
