Adverse Weather Disrupts Domestic Flights in Nepal

Adverse Weather Disrupts Domestic Flights in Nepal

Nepal’s aviation sector has been significantly affected by adverse weather conditions, leading to disruptions in domestic flights. Poor visibility caused by deteriorating weather has been identified as the primary reason behind the interruptions.

According to officials at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), while Visual Flight Rules (VFR) operations are ongoing at the airport, most airports outside Kathmandu have not been able to conduct flights since morning. Among the affected airports, flights have only been operational at Bhadrapur, Bharatpur, Pokhara, and Surkhet, as stated by TIA spokesperson Rinjee Sherpa.

Flights at Kathmandu Airport, however, continue to operate regularly for both domestic and international routes. Despite this, several airports receiving direct flights from Kathmandu remain non-operational due to poor visibility.

Buddha Air spokesperson Dipendra Kumar Karn confirmed that flights are currently running to destinations like Bhadrapur, Bharatpur, Pokhara, and Surkhet. However, operations at other airports are delayed due to thick fog, especially in the Terai region. “Airports in the Terai area often open late due to dense fog,” Karn explained.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has attributed the disruption to the partial influence of a western low-pressure system. Meteorologist Binu Maharjan stated that most regions of the country are experiencing varying levels of cloud cover. Specifically, areas in Karnali, Lumbini, Gandaki, Bagmati, and the eastern part of Madhes Province are under general cloud cover, while Koshi and Sudurpashchim Provinces are experiencing partial cloudiness.

“Compared to today, Monday is expected to have heavier cloud cover, with a likelihood of rainfall,” said Maharjan. “Light rain is anticipated in the hilly regions of Bagmati, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim Provinces.”

The western low-pressure system’s impact is projected to intensify on Monday and Tuesday, increasing the chances of further cloud cover and rainfall, according to the department.

The weather-induced flight disruptions serve as a reminder for travelers to stay updated on flight schedules and prepare for potential delays. The ongoing weather patterns highlight the importance of monitoring meteorological forecasts, especially during seasons with frequent disturbances.
