Bandipur Promoted as a Prime Tourist Destination Through “Bandipur in Kathmandu” Program

In a bid to further promote Bandipur, Tanahun’s premier tourist destination, at both national and international levels, the “Bandipur in Kathmandu” program was organized yesterday. The event was jointly conducted by Bandipur Rural Municipality and the Gandaki Province office of the Nepal Tourism Board, in collaboration with the regional hotel association of Bandipur.

Deputy Prime Minister Highlights Tourism Revival

The program was inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Bishnu Paudel, who noted that it’s tourism journey had experienced both highs and lows in the past but is now gradually regaining momentum. He emphasized that the local community plays a pivotal role in promoting it’s tourism, which is rich in religious, cultural, and natural heritage. Minister Paudel also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continuously support infrastructure development in the region, ensuring that remains accessible and appealing to visitors.

Bandipur: A Living Museum of the Hill Region

Event coordinator Aashutosh Pradhan described Bandipur as “Nepal’s living museum of the hill region.” He highlighted the town’s unique attractions, including traditional Newari-style houses and narrow alleys, Thani Mai Temple, Khadgadevi Temple, the expansive Tundikhel ground, and the Siddha cave. Pradhan further emphasized the cultural richness of the Gurung, Newar, and Magar communities and the distinctive local cuisine, which collectively create an immersive experience for tourists.

Promoting Tourism Through Special Campaigns

Bandipur Rural Municipality Chairperson, Surendra Bahadur Thapa, informed attendees that the ongoing “Bandipur Visit Year 2025” campaign aims to boost tourism in the area. He expressed confidence that events like “Bandipur in Kathmandu” would play a significant role in promoting the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage to a broader audience. The program also aimed to create awareness among both domestic and international tourists about Bandipur’s historical significance and attractions.

Recognizing Contributions in Tourism, Education, and Health

During the event, individuals who have made significant contributions to it’s tourism, education, and health sectors were honored. Chij Kumar Shrestha received a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to education, Dr. Madan Kumar Piya was recognized for his work in health, and Santa Kumar Shrestha was awarded for his exceptional efforts in tourism promotion. These awards reflect the community’s acknowledgment of the efforts that help preserve and enhance it’s local culture and services.

Known for spectacular sunrise and sunset views, the town also boasts a rich history as the old administrative center of Tanahun district. Before motorized transportation was available, It served as a critical trading hub, connecting Kaski, Lamjung, Gorkha, and Manang through the southern trade routes. Even after the district headquarters shifted to Damauli, Bandipur has maintained its status as a globally recognized destination due to its cultural heritage and natural charm.

Nestled on a hilltop between the Trishuli River valley and the Himalayan foothills, It offers panoramic views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Lamjung, and Dhaulagiri mountains.
