Bhutan Makes Historic Entry in Lumbini with Landmark Temple Project Worth Nu 160 Million

Bhutan and Nepal have marked a significant milestone in their longstanding diplomatic and cultural relationship with the groundbreaking ceremony (Salhang-Tendrel) of the Bhutan Temple Complex in Lumbini, the sacred birthplace of Gautama Buddha. The project reflects the deep-rooted Buddhist heritage shared by both Himalayan nations and signals stronger cultural cooperation in the years ahead.

Nu 160 million fully funded by Bhutan government

The ambitious project, estimated at Nu 160 million, is being fully financed by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The temple complex will feature a traditional Bhutanese-style monastery inspired by the iconic Tango Monastery, particularly its revered Utse structure, showcasing its rich architectural and spiritual traditions.

In addition to the temple, the complex will include residential and support facilities designed to accommodate monks, pilgrims, and visiting devotees from around the world.

Construction underway in Lumbini’s Western Monastic Zone

The temple complex will be constructed on an 80×80 metre plot allocated within Lumbini’s Western Monastic Zone, a dedicated international area where Buddhist nations build monasteries representing their unique traditions and cultural identities. According to officials, construction is expected to be completed by 2028.
